Maybe the Marcellus girls soccer team would not want to get into the habit of playing overtime games — but if it does, it might as well win them. Three times in a span of seven days, the Mustangs have gone beyond 80 minutes — and each time, Marcellus has pulled out a win, culminating in Thursday night’s 1-0 home win over the Solvay Bearcats where Becca Eddy scored the game-winner for the second game in a row. Each side had played in an exciting overtime contest on Tuesday. Marcellus had fought past Dryden (Section IV) 2-1, while Solvay took its first loss of the season to Cazenovia 4-3. And espite all the offensive talent present, it would take a long while for either side to break through. They played on fairly even terms in regulation. Knowing what each other would do, Marcellus and Solvay did a sound job on their respective defensive sides, staying at home and preventing a barrage of shots. As a result, Solvay goalie Chelsea Root posted eight saves and kept the shutout going, as did Marcellus keeper Megan Tock with her seven saves, and once again OT would be required. Midway through the first extra period, Marcellus set up another attack. Once again, Eddy fought her way open as Leea Sinay passed to the middle — and Eddy’s shot got past Root for the only goal of the night.
