Securing second place in the OHSL Liberty division behind Cazenovia, the Skaneateles girls track and field team knocked off two main rivals — Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge in last Tuesday’s regular-season finale on the Eagles’ home track.
The Lakers beat J-E 91-50 and held off the Mustangs 76-65, this despite the fact that Marcellus earned most of the race wins and claimed the 4×800 relay, too.
Sknaeateles countered with a clean sweep of the field events. Gabby Eckles keyed that push, going 30 feet 10 inches in the triple jump and clearing 5 feet 1 inch to win the high jump.
Caroline Walton topped the shot put, tossing it 34 feet 6 inches, while Grace Van der Ven put up a top long jump of 15 feet 2 3/4 inches. In the pole vault, Kaela Fiutak cleared 7 feet 6 inches.
Victoria Sakal still owned the sprints, too, as Sakal won the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds and ran the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds. In the 4×100 relay, Sakal, Fiutak, Cassie Berg and Amelia O’Hara prevailed in 53.7 seconds.
Van der Ven teamed with Amanda Gray, Eileen Ford and Erin Tonzi to win the 4×400 in 4:20.9.
Skaneateles lost in the boys meet 97-44 to J-E and 106-34 to Marcellus, despite Tim Lewis clearing 6 feet in the high jump. Tim Weyneth claimed the 400 hurdles (1:05.4) as the Mustangs’ Mike Quercia won four times in the 400-meter dash, mile, triple jump and as part of the 4×800 relay.
