CENTRAL NEW YORK – Twice already this season, the Fayetteville-Manlius Green boys golf team has knocked off undefeated league opponents.
Having already done so halting Baldwinsville’s 24-match win streak, the Hornets prevailed again last Wednesday in a 200-201 thriller over first-place West Genesee Gold at Green Lakes.
The Wildcats had prevailed 180-189 when they first met Aug. 30 at Westvale. But this one was tight from the outset as three players shot 38 – Dylan Friedman for F-M Green, Ben Glass and Jason Clifton for WG Gold.
Will Kettell and Henry Will each shot 39 to thrust the Hornets in front, yet it had to wait to see what happened as the Wildcats turned in a 41 from Jameson Bard and 42s from Jack Einlich and John Scholts.
Ryder Baldwin equaled Bard’s 41, meaning that someone needed to shot a 43 for F-M Green – and Duncan McDaniel posted that exact number to get the Hornets in front, though Tyler Burns also shot 43.
All this happened 24 hours after F-M Green got another key league win over Cicero-North Syracuse Blue 198-206.
Kettell’s 37 at Arrowhead Golf Course equaled that of the Northstars’ Kaeden Hacker. Baldwin posted 38 to equal Drew Kippen, but he Hornets got away when Will’s 39 and Hugh Roddy’s 41 beat any other C-NS Blue total and McDaniel added a 43 – just as he would, in timely fashion, a day later.
Then, two days after beating WG Gold, F-M Green routed C-NS Green 195-265. Kettell nearly matched par with his 37 as McDaniel shot a 38, beating out a 39 from Burns, a 40 from Baldwin and a 41 from Roddy.
On its way to another possible undefeated regular season within the Onondaga High School League, Christian Brothers Academy did suffer a setback.
It came courtesy of Jamesville-DeWitt, who won a 201-205 match over the Brothers last Wednesday as part of a three-team event at Drumlins that also included Syracuse City, who shot 235.
J-D’s Donovan Scullion and CBA’s Patrick O’Connor tied for the low individual round of 38, while three others – David Ahn and Beau Hayes for the Red Rams, Michael Brown for the Brothers – finished at 39.
Vincent Fricione’s 40 gave J-D a bit more of a margin and Jackson King clinched it with a 45 as, for CBA, Luke Petragnani and Will Cannizzo each shot 41.
Just before this, the main CBA squad had to work hard to turn back Westhill 209-214 in cool, windy conditions at Camillus Golf Club.
Depth had to be utilized since Westhill’s Danny Young led all individuals with a 35, but the next three spots were claimed by CBA as Liam White had a 40, Rowen Lynch a 41 and Luke Snyder a 42.
And when Emmet Kilmartin and Ryan Hayden both shot 43 to equal that of Westhill’s Grady Pens, the Brothers had moved to 11-0 on the fall.
F-M’s White team also earned a victory, topping Baldwinsville White 221-232 at Timber Banks led by Chet Baron-Phiillips, whose 42 tied the Bees’ Rocco Weaver for individual honors.
Taden Minichillo, with a 43, was alone in third place. Gavin Balinfly shared fourth place with a 44 as Aidan Curran, Grant Rhyde and Cullen Vredenburgh clinched it for F-M Green, each shooting 46.
On Friday, F-M White lost 202-216 to West Genesee Blue, a match where Turner Berry’s 40 was only topped by a 37 from the Wildcats’ Lincoln Christopher. Balinfly had a 41 and Curran added a 44.
