CENTRAL NEW YORK – One team familiar to a fall schedule and another getting used to it both continued to find early-season success.
Continuing to flourish in its new fall setting, Marcellus moved to 2-0 on the season last Wednesday against Homer, defeating the Trojans 220-241.
Will Glass, with a 40 for nine holes, and Ben Reome, with a 41, beat out the 42 from Homer’s Bethany Wineburg, which John Williams matched. Deieter Stiegerwald added a 45 and Chris Loveless finished with a 52.
On Thursday afternoon, Marcellus defeated Chittenango 248-273. Both teams struggled, but the Mustangs did enough as Glass shot 44, with 50s contributed by Stiegerwald and Reome. Williams and Loveless both posted 52.
Back on Aug. 25, Skaneateles opened its season against Cazenovia and easily won this Lakers duel 211-235, led by Jack Marquardt’s even-par 36 at Cazenovia Country Club.
Drew Mancini, with a 39, beat out Cazenovia’s Nico Segall (40) for the runner-up spot, while Will Murphy and Charlie Girzadas both shot 44 to round out the top five and Finlay Coyne added a 48.
Then the Lakers handled Jordan-Elbridge 200-259 last Monday at Millstone with Marquardt shooting 34. Mancini again had a 39, aided by a 41 from Murphy and 43s from Girzadas and Coyne. Emerson Derby led the Eagles with a 46.
In Thursday’s 193-282 rout over McGraw at Knickerbocker Country Club in Cincinnatus, three players – Marquardt, Mancini and Girzadas – each shot 38 for nine holes.Murphy, with a 39, and James Lovier, with a 40, provided further depth as Coyne contributed a 42.
Westhill was already 2-0 when it challenged Christian Brothers Academy Wednesday afternoon at Drumlins, but could not keep up with the Brothers’ depth in a 195-214 defeat.
Danny Young finished with a 41, as did Teddy DeMore, but three CBA golfers equaled those numbers and two others, Jack Gregory (35) and Luke Snyder (37), did better. Grady Pens and Evan Chaddock both shot 43.
Prior to this, Westhill had defeated Chittenango 215-257 at Woodcrest with Pens shooting a 37 to top all individuals. Young had a 40, with Chaddock third at 43 and Anthony Sampo adding a 46.
West Genesee had its two teams meet one another on Aug. 25 at Westvale, with WG Gold defeating WG Blue 189-203.
Jason Clifton’s 35 took individual honors ahead of Frank Barbuto and Parker Berg each shooting 38. Ben Glass, Jon Shoults and Jack Elinich each posted 39 and Ashton Fassinger added a 40. Colin Straub and Max Leubner each shot 41, equaling Jameson Bard.
Even bigger for WG Gold was what it did last Wednesday afternoon, facing traditional power Fayetteville-Manlius Green and prevailing over the Hornets 180-189.
Taking advantage of its Westvale knowledge, the Wildcats were deep and balanced behind the 34 by the Hornets’ Duncan McDaniel. Barbuto and Clifton both shot 35, Glass had a 36 and 37s were posted by Bard and Elinich,
WG Blue almost won last Monday, edged 206-207 by Liverpool at Foxfire. Topher Shoults, Alex Cammarata, Colin Straub and Andrew Banish each shot 41 as Lincoln Christopher added a 43, but the Warriors had the low two individual rounds from Owen Michaud (39) and Dom Osbeck (40).
Another close match on Tuesday had WG Blue taking a 193-197 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue. Cammarata shot a 36 at Westvale and Jonathan Lape was third with a 38 behind Drew Kippen’s 34, while Straub shot 39. Banish and Shoults both posted 42.
Finally, WG Blue got a win Wednesday, routing C-NS Green 199-237 at Greens at Beaumont.. Banish and Christopher both shot 38 and Lape followed with a 39, Shoults’ 40 completing a top-four Wildcats sweep.
J-E claimed its opener Aug. 25 over McGraw 258-293. Though Derby’s 45 trailed a 44 from McGraw’s Zander Weeks, Caden Hearn was third with a 47. with David Lawless (53) beating out Noah Spilberg (54).
In Wednesday’s 220-282 loss to Tully at Vesper Hills, Hearn shot 47, which five Black Knights golfers matched or lowered, led by a 42 from Tristan Hendricks. Then the Eagles fell to LaFayette 234-241 despite a 40 from Derby that took individual honors.
