In its return to action at the end of the April school break, the Cazenovia softball team managed to win both of its games and take the top spot at Saturday’s Vernon Verona Sherrill Tournament. The highlight for the Lakers was beating the host Red Devils 3-2. Nicole Chiarell pitched all seven innings, earning the win as Cazenovia produced a run in the third inning and, with the score tied 1-1, used two runs in the fourth to move ahead for good. Also, the Lakers bashed Carthage 10-1, getting at least one run in five consecutive innings, starting in the second. A five-run outburst in the fifth put the game away. Meghan Kurucz allowed just five Comets hits in her complete-game effort and joined Belle Hoagland, Melanie Arehart, Tina Gilliland, Alex Hardke and Nicole White as they each drove in runs. Cazenovia earned 11 hits overall. Now the Lakers would re-enter the OHSL Liberty division race, going to Hannibal Tuesday and hosting Skaneateles Wednesday before a non-league contest with Auburn Friday afternoon.
