Onondaga County residents are invited to attend the annual Metropolitan Syracuse Wastewater Treatment facility open house Saturday Sept. 25 as part of Water Quality Awareness Weekend. The facility, located at 650 Hiawatha Boulevard West in Syracuse, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with tours conducted by WEP staff approximately every 45 minutes throughout the day. Metro treats an average of 65 million gallons per day. Over the past decade, Onondaga County has invested $163.2 million in improving Metro’s treatment capacity and processes, and have reduced phosphorus discharges to the lake from the treatment plant by more than 80 percent. Phosphorus concentrations in the lake are directly linked to algae blooms, the reduction of which means clearer water and more oxygen for aquatic life.
