As it turned chilly again in Central New York, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team attempted to go the opposite way — and succeeded in that endeavor for a while.

Going into Saturday’s game against Skaneateles at Homer High School, the Lakers are 3-0, fresh off two wins in the previous four days.

In Thursday’s game at Marcellus, the Lakers ignored the snow and fought its way to a 10-9 victory over the Mustangs, its closest affair so far.

Up against both the elements and the opponent on the field, Cazenovia matched Marcellus throughout a tough first half, going to the break in a 4-4 tie.

Cazenovia sneaked in front in the third quarter by doubling its output, and would hang on down the stretch with inspired play on both ends.

Justin Hubbard produced three goals to lead a balanced Laker attack. Brian Regan and Brandon Moyer each found the net twice, with Coleman Koesterer gaining a goal and two assists. Aaron Race and Chris Nourse also contributed goals.

By contrast, just four Marcellus players scored, with Jeff Watson gaining four of those goals. Patrick Cooney made 11 saves, all of them important, to help the Lakers stay in front at theend.

Prior to this, Cazenovia toyed with first-year varsity squad Hamilton last Tuesday night, shutting out the Emerald Knights 15-0.

All of the goals came in the first three quarters, and were spread around. Koesterer and Race each gained three goals and two assists, with Moyer close behind in the points column earning three goals and one assist.

Hubbard scored twice, with Regan augmenting his single tally by getting two assists. James Irwin, Bartlett and Judson Chase also scored, with Bartlett and Nourse earning assists.

Right after Skaneateles, Cazenovia gets another big test Tuesday from Jordan-Elbridge in a game played on the turf at Chittenango. A Saturday trip to Homer will follow.
