Gaining an edge in an ongoing local feud, the Jamesville-DeWitt baseball team relied on the strong pitching of Mike Gianni to shut down East Syracuse-Minoa last Wednesday afternoon as it beat the Spartans 5-1. Gianni finished with eight strikeouts and only allowed two hits in his complete-game effort, both in the sixth inning. ESM scored without a hit in the top of the first inning as Jake Curtis got credit for the RBI. Down 1-0, J-D turned it around by getting four runs off Brandon Lansing in the bottom of the second — and Gianni was mostly responsible, his bases-clearing double producing three RBIs. Andrew Hughes and Jack Susman also drove in runs. In what proved to be a tough trip to Fulton last Monday afternoon, the Red Rams needed a seventh-inning rally to push pas the Red Raiders 6-4. Ahead 3-2 after three innings, J-D saw that lead get away as Fulton (just 2-6) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to inch in front, 4-3. Three outs from defeat, the Rams stormed back by getting three runs off Fulton pitcher Marshall Cooper in the top of the seventh, and John Sheedy, pitching in relief of Hughes, would make that lead stick. Anthony Dunn smacked a three-run home run as Hughes also got an RBI.
