In the week where Christian Brothers Academy officially broke ground on what will be a new all-weather turf at Alibrandi Stadium, the Brothers’ boys lacrosse team sought to build itself in other locales. The big story came on Thursday night, when the Brothers were in prime position to hand defending Class C champion Skaneateles its first loss of the season, only to lose all traction and take a 10-9 overtime loss to the Lakers. CBA won 13 of 15 face-offs in the first half, setting up an attack that peppered the tough Skaneateles defense for a 4-1 lead and, by halftime, a daunting 9-4 margin. Jared DePalma, with two goals and two assists, led the way as Tom Trasolini and David Biegler also had two-goal outings. John Greacen, Nate Frechette and Casey Lasda scored, too, with Lasda and Frechette joining Trasolini in the assist column. Suddenly, in the second half Skaneateles started winning the draws, and the Brothers found itself shut down. The Lakers ate away at the margin, caught up at 9-9 on defender Kyle McQuiggan’s goal late in regulation, and won when Kyle Baier scored for the third time 2:20 into overtime. As if that heartbreak wasn’t enough, CBA again went through overtime blues on Saturday during a 14-13 loss to Marcellus. The difference here was that the Brothers’ early lead (3-1) vanished long before halftime. Marcellus erupted for six goals in the second quarter alone and sneaked in front, 7-6, as both sides maintained a fast pace despite hot conditions. All through the second half, CBA kept matching what Marcellus was doing, all the way to a 13-13 tie at the end of regulation before the Mustangs got the OT goal and prevailed. More than anyone else, Matt McCaffer hurt the Brothers’ defense, leading his side with six goals and two assists. On the other end, Mustang goalie Roger Trombley continually frustrated CBA forwards as he made 20 saves. DePalma, with three goals and two assists, led a well-balanced attack where Biegler also scored three times. Lasda had two goals and two assists, with Trasolini matching that two-goal output. Greacen, Matt Dugan and John Buckel scored, too. CBA met “Holy War” rival Bishop Ludden last Tuesday night and halted the 4-1 Gaelic Knights’ early-season momentum during a 14-8 victory. An active first half saw the Brothers set a fast tone, outscoring Ludden and building a 10-6 advantage. When high winds showed up for the second half, CBA adjusted its defense and prevented any comeback attempt. At the head of the attack, Lasda and Frechette each had four goals and two assists. DePalma scored twice, with Trasolini stepping up for a goal and three assists. Greacen, Dugan and Ty Murphy also scored. Nate Wadsworth recorded most of his 13 saves in the second half. CBA meets Jordan-Elbridge and Cazenovia this week.
