Liverpool’s girls basketball team worked hard throughout last week’s Peter Hyde Tournament at Maine-Endwell High School near Binghamton — and that hard work led to a third-place finish.
The Warriors met host Maine-Endwell in the first round and found itself trailing through much of a 61-49 loss to the Spartans.
Instead of eight-minute quarters, the two sides played 16-minute halves, enough time for Maine-Endwell to push its way to a 31-21 halftime edge and maintain it against all of Liverpool’s comeback attempts.
Ally Zywicki, back from a brief absence, had just four points. In front of her, Katie Dalton had 12 points, while Sydney Chalifoux got 11 points. Nicole Ciricillo and Nina Tassone got seven points apiece as Lyteshia Price gained six points.
Relegated to the consolation game against Union-Endicott 24 hours later, the Warriors got a big performance from Zywicki in a 59-46 victory over the Tigers.
Liverpool seized a 32-25 first-half lead, then kept it as Zywicki hit on three 3-pointers, finishing her night with 19 points. Price and Nina Tassone had 10 points apiece, with Ciricillo getting eight points and Shannon Seymour six points.
This win improved Liverpool’s mark to 3-4 as it returned home to face Nottingham Tuesday night, its first game in 2010.
