Two local boys lacrosse teams ran into each other before the first full week of April was over, and it proved exciting. In fact, Westhill and Marcellus would go into two overtimes Monday night before the Mustangs, completing a stirring comeback, toppled the Warriors 11-10. Westhill dominated early, not allowing a goal until the second quarter and taking a 5-1 halftime lead. But the Mustangs’ attack woke up in the third period, closing the margin to 9-6, and continued to surge in the fourth quarter by catching up at 10-10. Through one OT period, neither side could convert, but Marcellus stayed patient and, in the second period, pulled out the win. Overall, Steve Brissette and Matt McCaffer each had three goals for the Mustangs as Greg Ramsden found the net twice. Luke McNaney had a goal and three assists as Carey Melinicki and Carmen Brienza also converted. Tom Glose and Tyler Tomeny added assists. On Westhill’s side, Owen Nicola had a game-high four goals, plus an assist, while Dylan Tripodi had two goals and one assist and Tris Nicola also scored twice. John Zimmerman and Alex Lesins had the other goals. Mark McAnaney had 13 saves, slightly more than Marcellus counterpart Roger Trombley. Prior to all this, the Mustangs’ 2010 season began last Saturday when it went to Homer and took a 17-10 loss to the Trojans. Already with two wins on the ledger, Homer set a fast pace in the first half, leaving Marcellus behind as it took a 10-5 lead. All the Mustangs could do was slow the momentum down, briefly, before a fast Trojan finish. Ramsden, with four goals, and McCaffer, with three goals, accounted for most of the Mustangs’ offense. Brissette and McNaney each had one goal and one assist as Brienza scored, too. Homer’s Carl Zimmerman piled up six goals and two assists.
