The Onondaga Historical Museum will feature a Power Point presentation by Mel and Mady Rubenstein of the book, “The Peacetime Draft During the Cold War” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It is free and open to the public.
The book is a compilation of stories from Syracuse area men like Hall Groat, Hal Brown, Dick Case, Rev. Ted Taylor, Sidney Lipton, Haden Patton, Dr. Roosevelt ‘Rick’ Wright and others, who served during that so-called peaceful, but uncertain and dangerous, era of the cold war. Since the draft has not been in effect since 1973, their stories may be the only ‘first hand’ evidence of how the draft affected over a generation of Americans.
Did it delay their marriage and their careers? What experiences did they have while in the service? And, how do they now feel about compulsory military service?
The Onondaga Historical Museum is located at 321 Montgomery St., Syracuse. Call 315-428-1864 ext 312 for information.
