CENTRAL NEW YORK – When Section III boys golf fall tournaments take place next week at Drumlins and the Pompey Club, sides from Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy were all favored to win.
In particular, the Red Rams had constantly beaten SCAC Empire division fields in large-scale tournaments, including twice more last week, though one of them was quite close.
When they played Tuesday at the Pompey Club, J-D shot 210 to beat Oswego’s second-place 220. Jackson Saroney and Michael Anthis both shot 40, tying Oswego’s Kevin Waters for first place. Jackson Saroney was fifth with a 42, followed closely by 44s from Brian Tollar and Ian Delpha plus a 45 from Sam Ahn.
East Syracuse Minoa was fourth, with a team total of 243. To lead the Spartans, Braedon Smith shot 45 to match Ahn as Jared Bricco, with a 47, had his team’s only other top-20 finish.
In a Wednesday match against Central Square and Auburn at Greenview, J-D shot 198 to beat the Maroons and Redhawks. Mitchell Archer’s 37 was the low individual total, Saroney and Anthis both posting 38 as Tollar shot 41 and Donovan Scullion finished with a 44.
Finally, a tight contest unfolded Thursday at ESM’s home course, the Links at Erie Village, but J-D still won, posting 197 to hold off Oswego’s 199 as the Spartans were third with 215.
Scullion had a 37 to tie the Buccaneers’ Kevin Waters at the top. Archer’s 39 was matched by two Oswego golfers, but Ahn and Tate Mullin both shot 40, helping J-D catch up, and a 41 by Tollar clinched it. Logan Welch led ESM with a 40, Smith adding a 41.
That same Thursday, CBA had seen its possible undefeated regular season and 13-match win streak upended by Skaneateles in a 223-231 defeat at Skaneateles Country Club.
Only two players broke 40 – Skaneateles teammates Drew Mancini (38) and Jack Marquardt (39), and Jack Gregory’s 42 was the only CBA score under 45.
Emmet Kilmartin put up a 45 and Eric Lee had a 47, while Ryan Hayden shot 48 and Patrick O’Connor a 49. It took a 47 from Will Murphy, 49 from Graham Bradley and 50 from Charlie Girzadas to help the Lakers hang on.
Before this, CBA movd to 12-0 last Tuesday at Drumlins in a 195-258 romp over Chittenango. James Stanton shot a 35. as Kilmartin and Luke Petragnani each posted 39 as Rowen Lynch put up a 40 and Will Young shot 42.
Then, making it 13 in a row on Wednesday afternoon, CBA handled Phoenix 209-252, with Gregory’s 36 the low round by five strokes. Hayden was second with a 41, with Stanton and O’Connor each posting 42 and Michael Brown a 44.
The defeat to Skaneateles did not linger, for CBA handled Homer 185-222 at Cortland Country Club a day later. Gregory’s strong 34 was augmented by Kilmartin and Luke Snyder each shooting 37, plus a 38 from Zach Cooper and 39 from Lynch.
F-M Green’s league title hopes took a hit last Wednesday at Foxfire when it dropped a 192-197 decision to Liverpool ,a team it beat 204-211 two weeks earlier.
Henry Will shot 36, behind only Brady Michaud’s 35. Ryder Baldwin’s 39 was matched or topped by three Warriors golfers – Owen Michaud (38), Dom Osbeck and Jake Berthoff (39 each), while Hugh Roddy had a 40. Duncan McDaniel and Dylan Friedman each shot 41, but Alex Kirkby equaled it to help Liverpool hang on.
Then the Hornets fell again Friday to Baldwinsville 194-206 at Timber Banks, the Bees avenging its earlier defeat as Will’s 39 was beaten by Billy Shipman (36), Alex Blum (37) and Owen Frechette (38). McDaniel and Tyler Burns both shot 41 ahead of a 42 from Roddy and 43 from Cameron Lukasik.
As for F-M White, it defeated Cicero-North Syracuse Green 205-221 last Wednesday at Greens at Beaumont. Grant Rhyde and Gavin Banifly both shot 40, with Nico Capriotti adding a 41 as Aidan Curran and Turner Berry both shot 42.
However, those same Hornets lost Friday to C-NS Blue 182-212 at Woodcrest. Chet Baron-Phillips shot 38 behind four Northstars led by Drew Kippen’s under-par 33. Balinfly and Luke McGinnis both shot 43, Curran and Berry both finishing at 44.
