ONONDAGA COUNTY – It took most of last week for the weather to improve and, by then, area high school track and field teams were ready to face big-time competition.
And many of them did so at last Friday’s East Syracuse Minoa Invitational, where West Genesee, Westhill, Solvay and Marcellus were all present and two of the sides won events on the girls side.
The Wildcats finished fifth in the team standings with 52 points, which included two wins in distance races as, in the 3,000-meter run, Zoe Maupin was victorious in 11 minutes, 15.97 seconds to get the 11:18.86 from Bishop Grimes’ Evy Livingston.
Maupin also was part of WG’s 4×800 relay team with Claire Griffin, Peyton Long and Andrea Conklin as they prevailed in 10:00.56 to Pulaski’s second-place 10:07.32.
Westhill, for its part, had Ashley Bolesh victorious in the 400-meter dash, her clocking of 57.43 seconds well clear of the 59.57 from Jamesville-DeWitt’s Nikki Militi. Kate Bendall took third place in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.74.
Solvay’s Emily Rolince threw the discus 100 feet 10 inches for second place as Marcellus’ Hailey Ellis got second in the shot put, heaving it 32’8”.
Prior to this, Westhill had a meet last Tuesday against Chittenango, prevailing 100.5-39.5 on the girls side but falling to the Bears 86-55 in the boys meet.
Bolesh went 26.5 seconds in the 200-meter dash, part of a sprint sweep as Isabel Leonardo, second in the 200, won the 400 sprint in 1:03.4 and Allison Langham went 13.4 in the 100-meter dash.
Mary Kate Rewakowski and Mallie Alt cleared 8 feet in the pole vault, Leonardo and Ileanna Hopkins topped 4’4” in the high jump as Emma Marshall threw the discus 81’3”and Jael Hill went 28’6” in the shot put. Kennedy Rose was first in the 800 in 2:37.1.
Over in the boys meet, Chittenango’s Joseph Lin and Caleb LeBlanc won three events apiece, negating some fine work by Westhill that included Carter Buckman clearing 10’6” in the pole vault and sprint wins by Furious McIntyre in the 100 (11.8 seconds) and Owen Mulholland in the 200 (24.0). Anthony Osorio had a triple jump of 39’4”.
In a first-place girls battle between two Lakers sides, Skaneateles could not keep up with Cazenovia, taking a 97-44 defeat.
Kyla Palmer went 59.0 seconds in the 400 sprint and 26.1 seconds in the 200, while Alice Spualding threw the discus 83’2” and cleared 8 feet in the pole vault. Lucy Fleckenstein took first in the 800 in 2:33.6 and the 1,500 in 5:20.5.
