CENTRAL NEW YORK – Of all the challengers it had for the Section III Class D girls lacrosse throne, Skaneateles may have worried most about Westhill, based on its talent and skill level.
If that’s the case, then last Tuesday’s showdown at Hyatt Stadium may have brought some comfort to the Lakers, who had to work all 50 minutes but still comfortably made its way to an 11-4 victory.
Accustomed to ending games by halftime, Skaneateles could not do as much against a stout Westhill defense during the first half, but kept patient and still made its way to a 6-2 edge.
Making sure there was no comeback, the Lakers got three-goal hat tricks from Bella Brogan and Lilly Marquardt, with Rachel Hackler scoring twice. Julia O’Connor and Paige Willard combined for five assists as they joined Camryn Calabro with a goal and Anasofia Cirincione with an assist.
No one on Westhill’s roster scored more than once, the single goals going to Rosemary Mahoney, Sophia Lasher, Kara Rosenberger and Aubrey Holowinski as Mahoney added two assists.
It proved far easier for Skaneateles against the combined Southern Hills team on Thursday afternoon, the Lakers showing plenty of respect by bringing its best effort and beating the Storm 17-4.
Brogan, with four goals, and Marquardt, with six assists to go with her lone tally, paced a well-balanced Lakers attack. Willard, Cirincione and Mara Stanton all contributed three-goal hat tricks, with Calabro converting twice. O’Connor had a goal and three assists.
This happened as Westhill, facing Christian Brothers Academy, battled to a 9-7 victory over the Brothers, accounting for most of the offense early as it led 7-5 by halftime.
It took Anna Rosenberger’s 10 saves to help Westhill hang on late, having seen Kara Rosenberger score three times as Holowinski and Lasher each converted twice. Adelaide Lowery got three assists, while Mahoney had a goal and two assists and Karly Dillobaugh also found the net.
Also last Tuesday night, Jordan-Elbridge took on Homer, a low-scoring affair that would ultimately go in the Trojans’ favor as it beat the Eagles 9-6.
Riley Crawford and Kelsey Brunelle each scored twice and got an assist. Makayla Penird and Brenna Tubert also had goals as Briella Gilfus got two assists. Still, Homer won as Ella Spanbauer led the Trojans with three goals.
When Marcellus faced Homer on Thursday, the Mustangs rolled to an 18-6 lead led by Cece Powell’s seven goals and Claire Card’s four goals and one assist. Adelle Aupperle scored twice, with Samantha Buff earning a goal and two assists.
Against Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon, Marcellus fought through the wet, chilly conditions and prevailed 15-10, steadily building its margin throughout the afternoon.
Topping what she did against Homer, Powell scored eight times, helped by Card’s three goals, plus two goals from Avery Shute and single tallies from Amanda Barbaro and Sophia Pilon. Annie Walters added an assist.
J-E also played on Saturday, against CBA, taking a 15-4 defeat to the Brothers. Penird had two of the Eagles’ goals, the others going to Crawford and Charlotte Hsiao.
