CENTRAL NEW YORK – Now getting into the heart of its schedule, the Marcellus boys golf team continued to outclass all of its challengers.
This included Solvay, whom the Mustangs beat 204-302 last Monday at Sunset Ridge, with Will Glass matching part in cold, wet conditions thanks to his nine-hole score of 36.
Elliot Austin, shooting a 41, just beat out the 42s from Ben Reome and Landon Kelly, while John Williams was steady, shooting a 43.
In girls golf, Marcellus also was successful last week, including a win in a local rivalry as the Mustangs topped Westhill 220-264 at Tuscarora.
Allison Coombs’ 47 led Marcellus and was the low round by eight strokes. Genevieve Formoza’s 55 beat out the 56 from Westhill’s Charlotte Roth as Claire Curtin had a 58 and Bella Formoza a 60 ahead of Samantha Burkett’s 63.
A day earlier, Marcellus beat Chittenango 226-265 at Tuscarora. Coombs shot a 50, with Curtin (56) beating out Genevieve Formosa (57) for second place. Bella Formoza’s 63 topped the 65s from the Bears’ duo of Abbey VanDee and Alea Morris.
As that went on, Westhill lost 229-265 to Cazenovia at Camillus Golf Club. Burkett shot a 64, just ahead of Lilyanna Kinsella (65) and Elizabeth Polcaro (67), but the Lakers swept the top four, led by Grace Probe’s 50.
After two straight defeats, Westhill was able to beat Skaneateles 234-256 on Thursday at Skaneateles Country Club, with Roth’s 46 a full 10 strokes ahead of the 56 from the Lakers’ Ella Arroyo.
Marcellus won, too, on Thursday, pulling away from Manlius Pebble Hill 224-261 to go to 4-1 on the season. Coombs’ 47 was one behind the Trojans’ Amitees Fazelli (46), but the Mustangs got in front with 57s from Curtin and Sofia Tufenkjian as Foromza contriubted a 63.
West Genesee was still seeking its first win of the season when it took on Fayetteville-Manlius Green last Monday and lost, 192-215, to the Hornets.
Sophia Simiele’s 48 at Westvale was second among individuals behind the 43 from F-M Green’s Gabby Dardis. But the Hornets had three others beat the 52 from Olivia Snyder as Gianna Corbin had a 57 and Allison Shortslef a 58.
Then, at Green Lakes two days later, WG lost to F-M White 204-214, with Simiele’s 51 third behind Georgia Perry (48) and Emily Pollard (50) as Snyder, Mia Barbuto and Allison Lamberton each shot 52.
During last Friday’s 164-169 loss to Liverpool at Hickory Hills, Lamberton led with a 41, just behind LHS’s Emma Fenwick (39) and Maddie Turck (40),while Simiele shot 42 and Snyder and Corbin both posted 43.
