ONONDAGA COUNTY – When the Baldwinsville boys tennis team saw its undefeated mark challenged by Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday afternoon, it responded quite well.
Claiming three different matches in three sets, the Bees prevailed 6-1 and halted the Northstars’ season-opening five-match win streak.
In second singles, B’ville’s Zach Treichler lost the second set, but outlasted Brady Petranchuk 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and much the same thing happened in a pair of doubles matches.
Nathan Smith and Eric Ventura had to battle past Tim Mai and Mike DeGroat 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while Zach Pendergast and Ethan Haahr got a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision over Joe DeGroat and Alex Cao.
Nick Helbig and Andrew Jung got past Matt Jordan and Ryan Kiel 6-4, 6-4, with Leonardo Vona and Connor Tutor routing DeGroat and Andrew George 6-0, 6-3.
Aidan Delaney, in third singles, handled Brandon Nguyen 6-1, 6-3, with Mason Doan suffering the lone defeat as he fell to Wyatt Dupell 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Two days later, B’ville met Liverpool and switched up some of its order, but got the exact same result, prevailing by a 6-1 margin.
As Treichler blanked Mason Pinchin 6-0, 6-0, Delaney got a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Kasey Maher, making up for Jung’s 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Justin Barrett in first singles.
Pendergast and Haahr’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Greyson Valente and Raury Bienkowski highlighted a doubles sweep where Doan and Helbig paired up to beat James Welch and Aiden Hunter 6-1, 6-0.
Ventura and Smith remained a doubles team, beating John Ioannidis and Aydan Presley 6-0, 6-3, with Vona and Tutor together to top Andrew Caimano and Andrew Wade 6-1, 6-2.
More dominance followed on Friday afternoon, B’ville wiping out West Genesee 7-0 as Doan, Treichler and Delaney did not lose a game in any of their singles matches.
Staying on the court a bit longer, Helbig and Jung worked past Nathan Smith and Joe Paoli 6-3, 6-1 as the teams of Tutor-Pendergast, Alex Blum-Kai Wilson and Nate MacGregor-Tom Canfield lost just three total games in six sets.
