CENTRAL NEW YORK – Another season of area high school boys tennis began on a warm Wednesday afternoon more common at the end of the spring than at the outset.
Taking full advantage was Cazenovia, who defeated Onondaga 5-0 last Wednesday afternoon as singles players Traian Cherciu and Garret Lounsbury each won their singles matches without dropping a game and Gabe Reagan only lost one game in the second set.
It was nearly similar in doubles, where Max Reger and Robbie Dorus survived a first-set tie-breaker and won in two sets, while Cy Lurie and Ford Brown pulled off a shutout.
Cazenovia got to 2-0 on Friday by defeating Marcellus 4-2, with Cherciu and Lounsbury each getting 6-0, 6-0 shutouts over, respectively, Tucker Guerrina and Errol Fern. Ethan Camp and Evan Molloy paired up in doubles to beat Bob Bartulatta and John Birchler 6-0, 6-0.
As for Chittenango, it brought a full roster to its season opener against Westhill and rolled past the Warriors 4-1.
Sam Gardner and Vinny DiNatale shut out Andrew Sadowski and Alex Tyscka 6-0, 6-0 as Noah Edwards and Kyle Werhlin got a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Lucas Stiner and Cameron Lopez.
Though Logan Bronner lost his singles match 6-0, 6-0 to Shay Smyth, Seth Boulter claimed a forfeit and Micah Alpuerto handled Zach Eldred 6-1, 6-0.
