CENTRAL NEW YORK – In a big meet last Thursday night, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius gymnastics team would offer a challenge to Utica Proctor.
And the Red Rams would prevail 140.5-128.05 over the Raiders amid a close all-around race between Katie DeStefano, Antoinette Sakellariou and Catherine Rizzo.
Taking the all-around honors with 35.45, DeStefano won the vault with 8.9, scored 9.15 on floor exercise and earned 8.8 on balance beam to go with 8.6 on uneven bars, with top-three finishes on all the apparatus.
As for Sakellariou, she won the beam with a 9.3 routine as she scored 8.6 on the vault and 9.1 on the floor, while Rizzo, with a 9.0, finished on top in uneven bars while scoring 8.75 on the beam and 8.1 on the vault.
It was Charlotte Ford and Morgan Devine tying for first on the floor, each scoring 9.2 for J-D/F-M, while Elianna Curley had a 9.1. Haydan McGinn was second on uneven bars with 8.7.
This followed East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool going up against Proctor last Tuesday night and taking a narrow 117.0-116.1 defeat to the Raiders.
Angelina Merulla won the all-around title with a score of 34.8, scoring 8.9 on uneven bars, 8.7 on floor exercise and 8.2 on the vault to win all three events.
And Merulla’s best score was 9.0 on the beam, second to the 9.2 from Proctor’s Ellainna Curley as Mary VanDeuson and Madelin Marquart both scored 8.0 with their floor routines.
Symone Coleman led the Raiders with an all-around total of 33.1, having earned an 8.8 on uneven bars and 8.3 on the floor, second both times to Merulla.
ESM/Liverpool lost 139.0-121.3 to Whitesboro on Saturday, though Merulla provided a highlight when she scored 9.4 on the beam to beat the 9.35 from Warriors star Kiara Khiamdavanh.
Merulla added an 8.9 on the vault and, with her all-around score of 35.4, contended behind Khiamdavanh’s 36.1 and the 36.9 from Whitesboro star Payton Smith, who had 9.5 on the vault and 9.25 on the floor.
