ONONDAGA COUNTY – Having played 14 regular-season matches without a blemish, the Baldwinsville boys golf team will face its biggest test during next Tuesday’s Section III Class AA championships at Drumlins.
But the Bees would go there with as much confidence and momentum as possible, having excelled in three more matches during the last days of Sepstember.
B’ville had defeated Fayetteville-Manlius White 125-145 last Tuesday during a rain-shortened match at Timber Banks, a solid follow-up to beating F-M Green at the Cavalry Club on Sept. 23.
Then, in a full round Wednesday against Liverpool at Foxfire, the Bees were again pushed but, led by Aiden Motala, it fought past the Warriors 188-196.;
Motala’s one-under-par 35 was the low round by three shots as Dylan Wirtheim, Brayden Penafeather-Stevenson and Owen Frechette each shot 38.
Though Liverpool’s Owen Michaud also had a 38, and it got 39s from Alex Kirkby and Owen Salanger plus 40s from Bradley Cole and Joe Sacco, B’ville clinched another win when Colin Ray managed a 39.
To finish the 14-0 run, the Bees needed to topple West Genesee Gold at Timber Banks on Friday, the same team it beat 194-200 when they first met Aug. 30 at Westvale.
Again, the Wildcats played B’ville as close as any team this season, but again the Bees were victorious by that same six-stroke margin, this time 203-209.
Half that margin was Motala shooting 36 to beat the 39 from WG Gold’s Ryan Till, which Keegan Lynch matched. But it would take Wirtheim shooting a 42 and twin 43s from MacGregor and Frechette to help hold off the Wildcats, who got a pair of 42s from Ben Glass and Owen Zoanetti, plus 43s from Jason Clifton and Tyler Anastasio.
