BALDWINSVILLE – For more than a week, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team held on to its 7-0 record and first-place spot in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division, waiting for the weather to get drier.
At last it did, and the Bees were able to honor its four seniors prior to last Friday’s home match against West Genesee, a team it had barely beat 4-3 back in the Aug. 31 season opener.
More than three weeks later, B’ville gave itself more of a cushion, winning a majority in both singles and doubles to top the Wildcats 5-2.
It didn’t take long in singles for Mira Nadzan to shut out Calina Olson 6-0, 6-0 as Alya Kalfass rolled past Angelina Allen 6-0, 6-2 This made up for a third-set tie-breaker that Ella Clary could not grab in a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) defeat to Helena Allen.
Leading the doubles charge, Reagan Doan and Julia Quinn handled Ava Amodio and Kailyn Drury 6-1, 6-1, with Keagan Downes and Laura Zoanetti beating Nicole Vasilev and Anneemarie Myers 6-2, 6-1.
Eva Paweelek and Carly-Ann Smith had a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Hannah Sparks and Grace McInerney, but in first doubles Elaina Nesbitt and Hannah Gould won over Margaret Mello and Isabelle Wells 6-4, 6-3.
It all leads to Tuesday’s rematch (weather permitting) with Fayetteville-Manlius, who is bent on avenging its 4-3 defeat to B’ville Sept. 2. The Bees also play Syracuse East in the final week of the regular season.
