ONONDAGA COUNTY – Just as school got underway, so did the girls swim teams at Skaneateles and West Genesee, both against tough opposition.
And the Lakers proved successful, taking on Cicero-North Syracuse last Thursday night and, by claiming the final race of the night, was able to defeat the Northsars 94-91.
Winning a pair of individual events, Alice Spaulding went 55.76 seconds in the 100-yard-freestyle and then was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.12, edging Elizabeth Springer’s 1:16.78. Sophia Soprano went 2:16.48 to top C-NS’s Leah Benedict (2:18.08) in the 200 freestyle.
At the outset, Spaulding, Arianna Matthews, Elizabeth Springer and Olivia Springer paired up to take the 200-yard medley relay in 2:00.28 to edge the Northstars’ 2:01.50, with Matthews going 2:26.29 in the 200 individual medley and Elizabeth Springer claiming the 50 freestyle in 25.76 seconds.
With the outcome still in doubt heading into the 400 freestyle relay, Skaneateles, trailing 87-84, paired up Soprano with Kyla Palmer, Caitlin Comer and Elizabeth Springer, and they won in a time of 4:09.40, well clear of C-NS’s 4:16.95.
In West Genesee’s case, that meant hosting New Hartford last Thursday night, a meet where the Wildcats found it difficult to keep up with the Spartans in a 96-81 defeat.
Lily Mauro did prevail on the diving board, earning 238.20 points. Mikenna Komuda finished second with 184.10 points.
Allison Putnam was second in a pair of races, going 2:13.21 in the 200 freestyle and 59.11 seconds in the 100 freestyle, just behind New Hartford’s Rhianna Lynch (58.78) in the 100. Maddie Owczarzak earned second place in the 50 freestyle in 27.42 seconds.
