CENTRAL NEW YORK – As they seem to do each spring, the Marcellus boys golf team is steamrolling through all of its Onondaga High School League opposition.
The Mustangs dominated last Monday’s match with Cato-Meridian at Sunset Ridge, winning by a margin of nearly 100 strokes as it blasted the Blue Devils 207-306.
John White matched par for nine holes with a 36 and Will Glass got close to it with a 38. John Williams had a 43 and Eliot Austin a 45 to match Ben Reome. Grady Germain added a 53.
It was similar in Friday’s match with Weedsport, Marcellus handling the Warriors 229-303. Glass again posted a 38, Williams improved to a 42 and Reome put up a 44. Germain’s 51 was two shots better than his last outing.
Solvay played last Wednesday against Weedsport and lost, 219-245. Matt Muehl’s 38 was beaten by the Warriors’ Wyatt LaForce (34) and Brandon Wood (35) as Anthony D’Agostino and Josh Komar each shot 48 for the Bearcats.
On Friday, Solvay fell 232-277 to Manlius-Pebble Hill, though it was a close race for the top individual spot, Muehl’s 37 just behind the Trojans’ James Wildhack, who had a 36. Komar shot a 46 and Mike Blakeman had a 57.
Over in girls golf, Westhill maintained the OHSL lead with a series of match wins, none bigger than its 201-217 victory over Marcellus last Thursday at Camillus Golf Club.
Having lost 223-230 when these teams met at Tuscarora in late April, the Warriors did better on its home course, seeing Catherine Dadey shoot 43 to top the 47 from the Mustangs’ Allison Coombs.
Maya Wollen, with a 52, was third, with Bella Jones and Charlotte Roth each shooting 53, beating the Marcellus trio of Genevieve Formoza (54), Miranda Stewart (55) and Danielle Copp (61).
When Westhill beat Bishop Grimes 211-245 earlier in the week, Dadey again led the Warriors, her 45 well clear of the 52 from Hannah Johnston. Roth got a 55 and Delaney Carroll added a 59.
Marcellus returned to the course last Wednesday and beat Chittenango 232-245, with Coombs shooting a 50 at Woodcrest, three ahead of the Bears’ Abby VanDee. Claire Curtin had a 57, with Stewart shooting 61 ahead of Genevieve Formoza’s 64 and Isabella Formoza’s 67.
Skaneateles moved to 3-3 on the season last Monday when it defeated Chittenango 232-266, Jillian Scott getting the low round of 49 at Woodcrest as Lili Winkelman finished with a 56.
A day later, the Lakers lost, 192-250, to Christian Brothers Academy at Drumlins. Winkelman had a 56 ahead of Scott’s 59 as Reese McConouhy had a 67 and Avery Ide a 68. Hana Kang, with a 46, led a top-four CBA sweep.
Up against MPH on Friday, Ide improved to a 48, even if it trailed the 42 from Amitees Fazeli and 44 from Parmees Fazeli. Chloe Corbett shot 52 and Scott earned a 53 in front of McConouhy’s 56.
West Genesee, meanwhile, got the low round from Sophia Simiele in last Monday’s match with Liverpool at Hickory Hill, though the Wildcats lost 191-200.
Simiele’s 41 topped the 43 from the Warriors’ best player, Jewelyanna Daniels. But Liverpool swept the rest of the top five before Olivia Snyder posted 52 as Analiese Straub had a 53. Gianna Corbin shot 54 ahead of a 57 from Allison Shortslef and 58 from Abby Fassinger.
A day later, WG lost, 231-253, to Baldwinsville at Timber Banks, where Simiele’s 52 did equal the low round by Anna Falcone. But three other Bees topped or equaled Straub’s 63 as Madalyn Laurciella had a 69 and Fassinger a 72.
Then first-place Fayeteville-Manlius Green handled the Wildcats 180-238 on Thursday at Green Lakes. Simiele shot 49, matched or bettered by four Hornets led by Gabby Dardis, who had a 42. Snyder, Straub and Shortslef each shot 63.
