BALDWINSVILLE – A special spring for the Baldwinsville boys track and field team only got more so when it claimed the championship of its own John Arcaro Classic Friday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
With more than 20 teams in the field, the Bees’ total of 74 points was enough to hold off the 61 points posted by second-place Cicero-North Syracuse as Fayetteville-Manlius (60 points) was third.
B’ville took three different field events, with Owen Weaver unleashing a top triple jump of 41 feet 2 1/2 inches as no one else in the field broke the 40-foot mark. Weaver also cleared 5’6″ to tie for eighth in the high jump as Tyler Rawlins (5’4″) shared ninth place.
Dan Ewald claimed the shot put with a toss of 41’2″ to edge Rome Free Academy’s Ryan O’Connell (41’1″) by one inch. Gibson Boudov, seventh in the shot put (38’5″), would beat everyone in the discus, his heave of 121’6″ edging the 120’7″ from Rome Free Academy’s Jacob Swavely as Ewald was third with 115’2″.
The Bees also won twice on the track, Jeff Ragonese going 1:59.64 to take the 800-meter run as Kyle Sheckler gained ninth place in 2:09.04 to go with a 10-foot pole vault that tied him for eighth place.

Ten of those points came from Madison Kennedy’s victory in the 400 sprint as, with her time of 1:02.08, she beat out the 1:02.45 from Schroeder’s Alyssa Fici as Avamarie Davis (1:04.68) was seventh.

All this followed Wednesday’s meet where B’ville’s boys defeated Fayetteville-Manlius 105-36 and West Genesee 115-26, which included Mellinger going 10.76 seconds in the 100 and 21.78 seconds in the 200.

Weaver put up a top triple jump of 41’7 1/2″, even better than he would do at the Arcaro meet. Sheckler cleared 10 feet in the pole vault, while Patrick Pasho threw the shot put 45’1 1/2″ and Boudov won the discus with 106’7″.
Then, right after it won at the Arcaro meet, some of B’ville’s boys went to Poughkeepsie for the 54th annual Glenn D. Loucks Games, where on Saturday it pulled off a series of strong performances.
In the 4×400, Mellinger, Weaver, Hayes and Jack McAllister roared to fourth place in 3:26.16, while Mellinger, Kaleb Paul, Brandon Levin and Malik Davis finished fifth in the 4×100 in 43.94 seconds. Holden-Betts, running in the featured Loucks Mile, finished in 4:19.90 to take ninth place.
