CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having climbed to the top of the Onondadga High School League standings in April, the Westhill girls golf team wanted very much to stay there once the calendar turned to May.
A key part to that equation was trying to earn a sweep of Christian Brothers Academy – which the Warriors did by the slimmest possible margin last Friday, edging the Brothers 194-195.
At the top, Catherine Dadey’s 42 for nine holes was three ahead of the 45 from CBA’s Bella Meade, with Maya Wollen’s 47 countering the 46 from Hana Kang.
Charlotte Roth’s 52 trailed Grace Catalano’s 48, but when Hannah Johnston posted 48 and Aubrey Mills could only manage 52 for the Brothers, Westhill had pulled it out.
Fresh in the minds of the Warriors was its 223-230 defeat to Marcellus on April 26 at Tuscarora Golf Club, where the Mustangs announced its presence as a league title contender.
Allison Coombs shot a 51 to lead Marcellus, two behind Dadey’s 49. It took a 54 from Geneveieve Formoza, a 57 from Miranda Stewart and a 61 from Danielle Copp to overcome Dadey and the 53 shot by Wollen.
Exactly one week later at Camillus Golf Club, Westhill rollled past Chittenango 199-272, led again by Dadey, whose 49 paced a top-four sweep that included Bella Jones” 50 and Roth’s 51, plus Wollen shooting 52.
Meanwhile, Marcellus took its first defeat of the season, falling 198-227 to CBA. Coombs had a 52 at Tuscarora, but four CBA players matched or bettered that score, led by Anna Fuller’s 46 as Stewart shot a 54, Formoza had a 59 and Copp earned a 62.
Those same two teams met again Wednesday at Drumlins, and again Marcellus lost, 188-209, with Stewart’s 46 and Coombs’ 47 beaten by the 44 from Kang and 45 from h Catalano. Formoza’s 54 and Copp’s second straight 62 were behind Fuller’s 50 and Meredith Sommers’ 49.
Marcellus returned to the win column Thursday, beating Bishop Grimes 236-284 with the top four individual rounds. Coombs had a 54, edging Formoza’s 55 as Stewart got a 63 and Formoza earned a 64.
Then a Friday rematch saw Marcellus again beat Grimes 194-211, with Coombs getting a 44 and Formoza a 47 as those two, along with Stewart’s 51, were ahead of the 52 from the Cobras’ Abby Docos.
Skaneateles returned to action on Thursday and won its Laker duel with Cazenovia by a score of 234-246.
West Genesee earned its first win of the season last Tuesday when it topped Cicero-North Syracuse Green 247-261 in a match at Northern Pines.
Sophia Simiele shot a 51 for the Wildcats, eight shots ahead of the 59 from the Northstars’ Lindsey Kubala. Support came from Kenzie Koster’s 64 and Analiese Straub and Gianna Corbin, who both posted 66.
Then WG faced C-NS Blue on Friday and had a different outcome, taking a 187-252 defeat. Simiele’s 57 was topped by four Northstars, paced by 41s from Jessica Riccardi and Isabella Borte.
In boys golf, Marcellus returned to action last Monday and, against Fabius-Pompey, was dominant once again, the Mustangs pounding the Falcons 210-274.
John White’s 36 at Sunset Ridge led a top-five Marcellus sweep. Will Glass put up a 39, with John Williams earning a 43 as Grady Germain and Ben Reome matched each other with totals of 46.
Then, defeating Manlius-Pebble Hill 222-259 on Thursday, the Mustangs had Glass shoot 39 to match the Trojans’ Tommy Wildhack, while White had a 42, Williams posted another 43 and Reome shot 47.
Bishop Ludden worked through last Wednesday’s wet conditions and defeated Weedsport 231-251. Andrew Towsley’s 42 beat out the 43 from the Warriors’ Wyatt LaForce and Jack Lowery, while Matt Knechtle put up a 44, Phil McGarvey had a 45 and Max Boyea shot 49.
