CENTRAL NEW YORK – After the Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse team earned a win over Jamesville-DeWitt on the last day of April, much bigger challenges loomed for the Hornets.
But all of them took a temporary back seat last Tuesday as East Syracuse Minoa, off to an 0-9 start, finally found the win column when it topped Syracuse City 15-11.
Three different Spartans earned hat tricks as Rylyn Commisso, with three goals and two assists, led the way, Anna Paduano and Mary Grace Godleski also scoring three times.
Sara Stark and Sophia Ferns each converted twice, with Sarah Stadelmann adding a goal. Jaelynn Aldrich picked up an assist and Arianna Reed’s 17 saves helped ESM overcome Syracuse claiming 18 of 24 draws.
This provided quite a contrast to what F-M was going through as, at Bragman Stadium, it was overwhelmed by reigning sectional Class A champion Cicero-North Syracuse in a 17-6 loss to the Northstars.
These same two teams had met April 14 and the Hornets had pulled it out 11-10, but C-NS had made some adjustments and, in all phases of the game, controlled F-M in the rematch.
Ava Angello was held to two goals and one assist. Julianna Cogliandro scored three times, with Emily Noel netting the other goal as C-NS got four goals from Brooke Molchanoff and Gabby Ciciarelli and three goals from Mackenzie Prentice, to go with Sophia Nesci’s two goals and five assists.
F-M couldn’t rebound in Thursday’s battle with rival West Genesee, outscored by the Wildcats 19-13 in a game that was tied, 9-9, early in the second half before WG went on a decisive 9-3 run.
Angello’s seven goals were matched by the Wildcats’ Olivia Blanding as Courtney Reynolds added five goals. No one on F-M got close to Angello’s output, though Noel and Coglinadro had two goals apiece and Melanie Steigerwald got a goal and three assists.
A day later, F-M got an outrageous performance from Angello, needing every one of her 12 goals, along with 13 draw controls, in an 18-15 win over Fulton where Noel also managed a three-goal hat trick and Cogliandro scored twice, adding an assist.
J-D, meanwhile, returned to action Thursday and hammered Oswego 20-3, with Merris Kessler getting four goals and two assists as Macy Durkin, Sadie Withers, Brooke Bort and Lindsay Hildreth had three goals apiece. Durkin added two assists as Sydney Balotin and Nicolette Militi also earned goals.
By that same 20-3 margin, ESM lost to Auburn, with goals from Godleski, Paduano and Morgan Purcell far from enough as Danielle Swietoniowski (five goals) and Caroline Smith (four goals) led the Maroons. Then ESM lost to Marcellus in another 20-3 decision.
Christian Brothers Academy was quite impressive in last Monday’s game agianst 7-2 Chittenango, doubling up on the Bears 16-8 to climb to the .500 mark at 5-5.
No one on Chittenango’s defense could contain Gracie Britton, who got to double digits in points thanks to her total of eight goals and two assists.
Maeve Mackenzie, with three goals and one assist, offered the most support. Amelia Bonacci had a goal and three assists, with Sydney Vaughn and Lilah Kirch each earning one goal and one assist. Emily Jones and Allie Quinn also picked up goals.
Then, challenging Class A power Baldwinsville on Thursday, CBA had some success on offense, but still took a 15-9 loss to the Bees.
Britton scored three times, adding four assists. Lilah Kirch got three goals as Bonacci had a goal and two assists. Mackenzie and Norah Kirch had the other goals as Carlie Desimone (four goals, three assists) and Mia Pozzi (three goals, three assists) paced B’ville.
In Saturday’s 12-9 loss to Corning (Section IV), CBA saw Britton net four goals, with Lilah Kirch getting two goals and an assist. Vaughn and Mia Kirch each had one goal and one assist, while Bonacci got two assists.
