CENTRAL NEW YORK – Hitting the heart of its league schedule, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team looked for any sort of momentum.
But the Lakers lost on April 24 to Marcellus 15-3, a game where only Madison DeAngelis, Dali Dennisson and Riley Knapp were able to pick up single goals.
Julia Reff tacked on an assist, with Mackenzie Halliday picking up six saves. On the Mustangs’ side, Claire Card had five goals and one assist, with Anna Spitzer and Lucy Powell each scoring three times and Spitzer getting three assists.
Looking to turn it around when playing at Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday night, Cazenovia instead saw the Brothers play a big first half on the way to topping the Lakers 18-8.
Scoring at will in the early going, CBA was up 13-3 by the break, with Gracie Britton earning six goals and two assists and Amelia Bonacci matching that point total with five goals and three assists.
Finding some success in the late going, the Lakers saw Knapp pick up four goals, with Charlie Prior getting two goals and one assist. DeAngelis got three assists and Megan Kuhn two assists as Katie Rajkowski and Caitlyn Smithers earned one goal apiece.
Chittenango found itself against reigning sectional Class D champion Skaneateles last Tuesday and, despite taking a 5-1 record into the game, struggled in a 17-2 loss to those other Lakers.
Tomi Newkirk and Cara Kielbasa did have second-half goals to prevent a shutout, but that was after Skaneateles sprinted out to a 10-0 halftime advantage. Eleven different players had goals for Skaneateles, led by Lilly Marquardt, who had three goals and one assist.
Two days later, the Bears hosted Mexico and turned it around, edging the Tigers 8-6 as it seized a 6-3 advantage by halftime and then relied on its defense to preserve that lead.
Each of Abby Penfield’s 10 saves proved important as, on the other end, Brooke Walters netted four goals. Newkirk scored twice, with Ashley O’Hara getting a goal and three assists and Caitlyn Sgambellone also finding the net.
In Saturday’s 18-7 win over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, the Bears would see Kielbasa break out with seven goals and one assist.
Walters had four goals and two assists, while O’Hara got two goals and three assists. Sgambellone and Skyler Brown both had a goal and two assists as Newkirk and Alazayah Smith each had one goal and one assist.
