CENTRAL NEW YORK –
In the first full week of April, area girls lacrosse teams looked to build upon the good work most of them had done in their regular-season openers.
One team that could not do so was Skaneateles, who went to Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday and was humbled in a 15-8 defeat to the Hornets.
Vastly improved from the side that went 4-13 a season ago, F-M won the battle of draws and ground balls against Skaneateles, getting seven draws from Ava Angello and four draws each won by Elrose Hanlon and Julianna Cogliandro.
Angello also paced the attack, her five goals part of a Hornets offense where Cogliandro, along with her three assists, joined Melanie Steigerwald, Emily Noel and Anne Leonard with two goals apiece. Steigerwald also had two assists, with Grace Reyna getting one goal and one assist.
Kathryn Morrissey, with four goals, accounted for half the Lakers’ output. Bella Brogan had two goals and one assist, while Lilly Marquardt and Ava Logan had the other goals. Julia O’Connor contributed an assist.
Roaring back on Friday, Skaneateles defeated Christian Brothers Academy 13-7, building most of its margin when it raced to a 7-2 halftime advantage.
O’Connor scored five times, adding a pair of assists. Brogan netted three goals, with Marquardt getting two goals and two assists. Rachel Hackler also converted twice, Ava Logan getting three assists and Anasofia Cirincione a single goal.
As for Westhill, the frustration of an 0-2 start that included losses to WG and Baldwinsville was taken out on Jordan-Elbridge last Monday night in a 23-3 romp.
It was 14-2 by halftime, the Warriors seeing Rosemary Mahoney, Gianna Zerillo and Audrey Holowinski each get three-goal hat tricks. Grace Winkler, Adelaide Lowery, Sienna Jetter, Isabel Leonardo and Carly Dillobaugh had two-goal outings, with Olivia Gonnella earning a goal and two assists.
A night later, Marcellus moved to 2-0 with a 14-3 win over Tully/Fabius-Pompey, seeing Lucy and Cece Powell each put up three goals as Lauren Weidner and Quinn Burnett had two goals apiece. Claire Card got a goal and two assists as Janie Powell, Kadie Tierney and Anna Spitzer earned one goal apiece.
Up against Class A power Baldwinsville on Saturday, Marcellus only trailed by one at halftime, but got outscored 10-2 the rest of the way in a 14-5 loss to the Bees.
Only Spitzer scored twice for the Mustangs, with Card adding one goal and two assists. Lucy Powell and Cece Powell had the other goals, B’ville led by Carlie Desimone (five goals, two assists) and Sophia Muscolino (three goals, four assists).
In Friday’s 18-1 win over Tully/Fabius Pompey, Westhill improved to 2-2 behind three-goal hat tricks from Zerillo, Lowery and Bella Sampo. Mahoney, Jetter and Kara Rosenberger were close behind, each scoring twice, with Anna Rosenberger earning two assists as she, along with Winkler and Gonnella, had single goals.
