ONONDAGA COUNTY – The Christian Brothers Academy boys soccer team had built a nine-game win streak before a 2-1 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius in the “Red Out” game for the American Heart Association on Oct. 2 at Alibrandi Stadium.
The state Class A no. 15-ranked Brothers returned to action last Thursday at Westhill, and it turned into a tense classic that the Brothers pulled out 2-1 in overtime.
Leading 1-0 late in regulation, CBA saw the Warriors tie it on a penalty kick by Emmet Starowicz with 45 seconds left in regulation, only to recover to get the OT game-winner as Jack Griffith and Connor Morgia picked up the goals and Finn Wheeler recorded 10 saves.
East Syracuse Minoa entered the state Class A rankings at no. 17, and then celebrated that status by going to Cortland last Tuesday and bashing the Purple Tigers 7-1.
Behudin Malkic led the Spartans by scoring twice. Five others – Garrett O’Donnell, Joel Alvarez, Jackson Tedesco, Armin Osmanovic and Zach Shufelt – had one goal apiece.
Then, at PSLA-Fowler on Thursday, ESM prevailed again, 3-1, to run its win streak to seven. Shufelt’s header of a corner kick got the Spartans in front and after the Falcons tied it, Alvarez scored to give ESM a 2-1 edge at the break.
The Spartans’ defense protected that lead well, and Tedesco’s goal midway through the second half provided a cushion, assists credited to Todd Durantini, Anthony Ciotti and Ibrahim Husakovic.
Getting an eighth consecutive win on Saturday, ESM shut out Whitesboro 2-0 as Alvarez and Evan deBerjeois both picked up goals, with assists going to Durantini and Shufelt.
Jamesville-DeWitt, coming off surrendering a two-goal lead in an overtime defeat to Cazenovia Sept. 30, roared back to life when it visited Central Square last Tuesday and blanked the Redhawks 2-0.
The Red Rams played superb defense, Sam Allen stopping all six shots he faced. On the other end, Max MacCaull netted a goal in each half, which proved enough as Sam Bobrek and Josh Aitken each picked up assists.
What followed, on Thursday, was a 6-0 shutout of Fulton, with Ryan Brazell getting a goal and two assists. MacCaull had one goal and one assist as Bobrek, Kyan Barbuto, Ian MacIntyre and Mike Meskos also contributed to the goals.
