CENTRAL NEW YORK – Girls volleyball teams from Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Bishop Grimes would all take part in last Saturday’s Baldwinsville Invitational.
J-D, playing in the Copper division, made it to the semifinals before falling to Fulton. Owego, from Section IV, took the crown that division.
F-M started the week with a dominant performance against Liverpool last Monday night, the Hornets taking little time to sweep the Warriors 25-12, 25-10, 25-15.
Kaylene Nobel accounted for nearly a full set’s worth of points with her 22 kills and 15 digs, helped by Rebekah Beasley, who had 10 kills and 13 digs. Molly McNany, who got three aces, also had 13 digs as Zoe Myint, feeding it to Nobel and Beasley, finished with 37 assists and 12 digs. Ziye Wang added six digs.
In Wednesday night’s 25-11, 25-13, 25-14 romp over Corcoran, the Hornets saw Myint amass 29 assists. Oksana Dannenberg, with her eight kills, complemented Nobel, who had seven kills. McNany got four aces and seven digs, with Beasley getting four kills and three aces.
J-D traveled to Fulton last Tuesday night and lost the first set 25-22. It won the second 25-19, only to see the Red Raiders claim the next two sets by margins of 25-16 and 25-22.
Reversing this result on Thursday night, J-D split two 25-20 sets with Auburn, but this time would take over and win the next two sets by 25-15 and 25-13 margins to claim the match.
Cadence Milligan led the way thanks to her 19 assists and six aces. Sophia Ferris had seven kills, three aces and six digs, with Elsa Hardt gaining six kills and six blocks. Natalie Goodson earned 14 digs as she joined Ferris and Sophia Zoghby in picking up three aces.
As for Bishop Grimes, it faced Cato-Meridian last Monday and won the first set 26-24 before dropping the next two sets 25-22 and 25-19.
The Cobras prolonged the match by winning the fourth 25-22, but a tight final set went in the Blue Devils’ favor by that same margin as Alyssa Cole (16 kills, four aces, 11 digs) and Emma Jordan (20 assists, 13 digs) led Cato.
Tori Sikorski gave Grimes 10 kills and nine digs. Josie Schembri had nine kills and eight aces, with Althea Simmons adding five aces and 16 assists. Tori Coppola earned 25 assists as Ashley Ince got 20 digs, with Avery Burnette earning 16 digs, five kills and five aces.
In a Thursday-night battle with Hamilton, Grimes twice made comebacks, only to have the Emerald Knights take the fifth set and pull it out 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.
Not only did Burnette earn 14 kills, she equaled Ince’s total of 23 digs. Coppola picked up 23 assists and seven digs, with Simmons getting 10 digs and Sikorski nine digs.
