ONONDAGA COUNTY – In the end, the depth and versatility put up by the Jamesville-DeWitt boys track and field team was too much for East Syracuse Minoa to handle – but on the girls side, the exact opposite proved true.
The twin showdowns between the two neighbors would get split as, on May 26, the girls Spartans would overwhelm the Red Rams in a 101-35 decision to move atop the SCAC Empire division standings, where it would later clinch the league title when it routed Fulton 110-25.
ESM swept all of the field events against J-D, led by Kaleigh Maloff, who had a first-place triple jump of 32 feet ½ inch and also cleared 6’6” to take the pole vault.
Arianna Brennen was first in the long jump, going 15’3 1/2”, while Aryanna Finkelstein threw the shot put 32’1 1/4” and Sophia Jackson heaved the discus 98’4”.
Moving to the oval, Rylie King swept to first in the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.9 seconds as Lilia Pena won the 400-meter sprint in 1:06.6.
J-D did get wins from Madeline Foss, who took the 1,500-meter run in 5:17.9 and the 3,000 in 11:25.6, while Jillian Kordas won the 800 in 2:41.2 and Brooke Hulbert was first in the 400 hurdles.
A day later, the boys showdown between J-D and ESM had the Red Rams prevailing 89-52 over the Spartans.
Caleb Smith was at the forefront for J-D, winning three events. Smith ran the 200 in 23 seconds flat, unleashed a long jump of 21’4 1/4” and cleared 6 feet to win the high jump.
The Rams also swept the distance races, where Connor Clarkson took the 800 in 2:14.5, Chris Donaghue won the 1,600 in 5:32.6 and Jacob Cottet covered 3,200 meters in 11:10.6.
Nick Dekaney won the 100 in 11.6 seconds as Sean Rigdon took the 110 hurdles in 18.2 seconds, with Shane Gargiulo winning the 400 hurdles in 1:05.1 and Sam Smith earning a top triple jump of 36’3”.
On ESM’s side, Kevin Hasty swept the throwing events by going 112’9 1/2” in the discus and 39’8 1/4” in the shot put, with Aidan Hirt winning the 400-meter dash in 53.4 seconds. Bennett Ferrari won the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, and helped Hirt, Sol Scofield and Dan Tover take the 4×400 relay in 3:44.2.
In the 4×800, Clarkson, Nate Rindfuss, James Hillers and Renaldo Colon got J-D a victory in 9:12.5 as Dekaney, Caleb Smith, Harpeet Duggal and Mike Meskos went 45.6 seconds to win the 4×100.
J-D then beat Central Square 111-29 last Tuesday as Caleb Smith went 20’7 1/2” in the long jump and 40’7 1/2” in the triple jump before he beat the field in the high jump, clearing 6 feet. Sam Smith took the 400 sprint in 54.3 seconds.
Dekaney took two sprints, going 11.7 seconds in the 100 and 15.4 seconds in the 110 hurdles. Other wins went to Gargiulo (400 hurdles), Cottet (3,200), Rindfuss (800), Hillers (1,600) and Daviel Cruz, who threw the discus 95’7”.
As that went on, J-D’s girls lost to Central Square 80-60, though Madeline Carter won the 100 sprint in 13.5 seconds, Maeve Murphy took the 200 in 28.9 seconds and Hulbert went 1:15.8 to claim the 400 hurdles. The Rams were also first in both the 4×100 (52.2 seconds) and 4×400 (4:38.8) relays.
