CENTRAL NEW YORK – Once more, the Cazenovia softball team put together a fine all-around performance to stay around the top of the Onondaga High School League Liberty division standings.
The Lakers shut out Jordan-Elbridge 7-0 last Thursday night, with Elora Wilmot setting the tone in the pitcher’s circle as limited the Eagles to a single hit and recorded 11 strikeouts.
Wilmot also earned a triple at the plate as Eva Gagnon’s triple led to two RBIs. Mya Skeele also drove in a run.
All of this made Cazenovia’s 1-0 defeat to J-E in Saturday’s rematch a bit easier to take, meaning that Cazenovia had overall gone 2-1 for the week, having beat Homer 11-3 before those games with the Eagles.
As this went on, it took nine games, plus some extra innings, for someone to finally get the best of the Chittenango softball team in 2021.
The Bears and state Class B no. 5-ranked Marcellus battled through nine scoreless innings last Monday afternoon before the Mustangs pulled it out 1-0 in 10.
Even with two potent lineups on the field, the game turned into a classic pitcher’s battle, with Chittenango’s Caroline Porter superb as she overcame three hits and five walks to strike out eight.
Try as it could, though, the Bears could not solve Marcellus pitcher Aubrey Fraher, limited to three hits, one each by Allison Soulier, Mya McLean-Wilson and Brooke Soulier.
So in the bottom of the 10th, with the game still 0-0, the Mustangs loaded the bases and saw Porter throw a wild pitch that allowed Sam Wynne to score the game’s lone run.
