MADISON COUNTY – It didn’t take long for the Cazenovia and Chittenango softball teams to confront one another in a fight for superiority among Madison County rivals.
Both sides would score plenty of runs in last Tuesday’s game, too, but it was the Bears getting the best of it, holding off the Lakers by a score of 10-9.
This made it two wins in a row for Chittenango following its season-opening 5-2 win over Skaneateles, and the win streak continued Thursday with the Bears blasting Mexico 19-8.
Against the Tigers, Chittenango had a modest start, but turned a 3-1 lead into much more when it erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the seventh, with a two-run sixth inning in between.
Madison Wagner’s three hits led to four RBIs to pace the Bears’ 18-hit attack. Anna Cavotta drove in three runs, with Rachel Gilbert and Allison Souter each finishing with three hits and two RBIs. Lily Callahan and Mya McLean-Wilson both earned two hits and an RBI.
Chittenango kept it up on Friday in the rematch with Mexico, claiming this edition 20-4 as it nearly batted around twice in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting up 12 runs in that frame.
Meanwhile, Cazenovia broke out Thursday and romped past Homer 19-4, getting runs in every inning except the third for its first victory of the season.
Seven runs in the first two innings were followed by a five-run fifth and four-run sixth, the Lakers ultimately accumulating 17 hits along the way.
Eva Gagnon, Kylie Fenton, Flora Wilmot and Mya Skeele had three hits apiece, with Wilmot scoring four runs. Luca Galley, Kylie Bennett andAbby Falso joined Gagnon and Wilmot as each of them got two RBIs, Falso belting out a double and triple.
