The common thread throughout early-season action for the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool ice hockey teams is that both of them are finding it difficult to gain traction.
In its second game of the season last Wednesday night, the Northstars, who had its game against Cortland-Homer postponed, could not contain Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt, taking a 6-2 defeat.
Tanner Long earned one goal and assisted on the other, by Chase Mearon. Still, the Brothers got away, overcoming Kaii Van Iuven’s 22 saves as John Greenwood (two goals, one assist) and Kodi Dotterer (one goal, two assists) led CBA/J-D.
At least C-NS did get on the board, which Liverpool could not accomplish while getting overwhelmed by Skaneateles 14-0 last Monday night at Allyn Arena.
The Lakers netted six goals in each of the first two periods and were led by Garrett Krieger and Charlie Major, who each passed the 100-point mark for their careers as they got three goals apiece, Krieger adding five assists and Major four assists. Teammate Luke Renaud netted four goals.
At 0-3 going into Friday’s game at Fulton, the Warriors saw its shutout streak halted, yet it wasn’t enough to catch the Red Raiders in a 5-1 defeat.
Cole Broughton earned that Liverpool goal, assisted by Cole Bradley. James Welch recorded 34 saves, but watched five different Fulton players get those five goals, led by Derek Schumaker, who had a goal and three assists.
Meanwhile, C-NS engaged in an exciting battle with Oswego, finally able to unleash its attack, only to get outscored in a 7-5 loss to the Buccaneers, who took control of the game by scoring five times in the second period.
Those five Northstars goals came from five different players, with Andrew Davis, Devin Kellogg, Braden Porter, Emmit Porter and Braylen Tuff each taking turns finding the net.
Kellogg and Braden Porter joined Kyle Debejian, Aidan Long, Aiden Mackenzie and Tyler Murray in the assist column. Jordan Miller finished with 22 saves as Oswego’s Collin Cianfrano paced his side, earning three goals and two assists.
