Blessed with warm weather for most of their remaining contests, area high school girls soccer teams hoped it would be memorable in some way.
Marcellus took an 8-2 record into its Nov. 5 game agianst Bishop Ludden, with the Gaelic Knights looking to move back above the .500 mark.
But the Mustangs prevailed 3-0, netting one goal in the first half and two more after intermission.
Those three goals came from three different players – Sam Wynne, Shannon Kellar and Juila Schoeneck. Much of the game was played in Ludden’s end, where Sarah Boyea had to make 23 saves to keep it closer.
Then it was Marcellus against Jordan-Elbridge last Monday night, and a single goal in each half sufficed in a 2-0 shutout of the Eagles.
It took 28 saves from J-E goalies Julie Smith and Erin LaVancha to keep it close. The patient Marcellus attack did get what it needed when Wynne and Hannah Durand scored, an assist credited to Katie MacLachlan.
West Genesee entered its homestretch fresh off a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Nov. 4 where Eva Poissant had the Wildcats’ lone goal, assisted by Marlee Pontello. Jenna Orr and Cameron Rosenthal made 12 saves between them.
Then, visiting Auburn last Monday night, WG prevailed 2-1, and for that it could again thank Poissant and Pontello, who teamed up on both of the Wildcats’ goals.
Twice, Pontello delivered the timely passes than Poissant finished off, and with Orr and Rosenthal stopping 11 of 12 shots, WG preserved that lead.
Skaneateles nearly slowed Cicero-North Syracuse’s six-game win streak on Nov. 6 at Hyatt Stadium, but took a 1-0 defeat to the Northstars.
Try as it could, the Lakers could not generate many scoring chances. On the other end, Bridget Carroll made nine saves, only surrendering a goal to Maddie Jackson assisted by Bri Dorrance.
Bishop Ludden prevailed 2-0 over Utica-Notre Dame last Tuesday night, netting both of its goals in the second half.
Claire Ruddy and Diedre Kivlehan earned the Gaelic Knights’ goals, with Annie Gaughan and Faith Griffin earning assists. Ludden goalie Sarah Boyea turned back all seven shots she faced.
Two days later, Ludden lost 6-1 to Homer, who improved to 8-1 overall with four unanswered goals in the second half. Ruddy netted the Gaelic Knights’ lone tally in the first half, assisted by Griffin.
