Absent the usual post-season events as motivations, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team would have to settle for trying to rise to the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division.
Taking the first step in that quest, the Bees met Cicero-North Syracuse in last Friday’s season opener, and grabbed every point from the Northstars on the way to a 7-0 victory.
Dominant in singles, B’ville featured 10-0 shutouts by Paige Tromblee over Laura Fehrman and Eva Smith over Karly Williams, with Brooke Tutor, in first singles, handling Krista Feeney 10-1.
The Northstars made it closer in two of the doubles matches, but still Audrey Benton and Hannah Gould won 10-7 over Camrie Hibbard and Jenna Mills as Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee beat Autumn Brown and Angel Luangaphay in a 10-6 decision.
By a 10-2 margin, Jessica Bilynsky and Julie Penfield won over Abigail Bustin and Elizabeth Chase, with Ayla Kalfass and Juila Quinn taking out Lauren Misco and Brooke Ten Brink 10-4.
Up against West Genesee a day later, B’ville would survive a close battle and edge the Wildcats 4-3, with the key blow coming from Paige Tromblee in singles.
Having seen Tutor take a 6-3, 6-4 loss to the Wildcats’ Katie Viau, Tromblee found herself pushed to a third set by Viau’s teammate, Angelina Llanos, but she played a strong third set to take the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and earn the clinching point.
Smith had already blanked Amodio 6-0, 6-0, while in doubles Benton paired with Kalfass to shut out Sarah Bacon and Elianna Cui by those same scores. Bilynsky and Penfield also prevailed in two sets.
