Once all the snow stopped, wrestling teams from Marcellus, West Genesee and Jordan-Elbridge made their way to three different location Saturday for three separate Section III tournaments.
Marcellus was expected to hold its own in the Class B meet at Central Valley Academy, and when the scores were added up, the Mustangs had 158.5 points for fourth place, host CVA claiming the team title with 212 points.
Twice, Marcellus got wins, with Carl Santiarello prevailing at 106 pounds when he beat Hannibal’s Jack Lamson 8-4, while Dylan Price fought to the title at 138 pounds in a 7-0 shutout over CVA’s Dawson Mower.
Ethan Ciota (113 pounds) and Kyle Brown (285 pounds) both made it to the championship round, only to get pinned – Ciota by South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s Najuan Williams, Brown by Chittenango’s John Spencer.
Three other Mustangs had third-place efforts, winning consolation bracket finals. Colin Scherer (99 pounds) had a third-period technical fall over CVA’s Cooper Reed, with Ryan Moses (132 pounds) blanking Mexico’s Joey Reed 6-0 and Wilvon McKee (220 pounds) pulling out a 3-2 decision over Anthony Crofoot.
Tim Okhman finished fourth at 138 pounds, with Zach Grolling fourth at 182 pounds. Dylan Hood pinned Hanibal’s Ethan Thibault for fifth place at 195 pounds as Quinten Weaver was sixth at 145 pounds.
West Genesee, meanwhile, was in the sectional Class AA meet at Auburn, where it was fifth in a nine-team field, but still earned a pair of titles.
Nate Wade had one of them, at 132 pounds, pinning Liverpool’s J.J. Paulston in the second period of their title bout. I the finals at 160, Colin McAvan held off Fayetteville-Manlius’ Alex Dauksza 6-4 to earn the title.
Dylan Pitonza got fourth place at 120 pounds, with Cole Arnold fourth at 220, while Peter Dwinell finished fifth at 195. Jake Wade was sixth at 99, Jacob Gonzalez sixth at 145 and Preston Elia sixth at 182.
Jordan-Elbridge took part in the Class C sectional meet at Canastota, where it was eighth out of nine teams with 87 points.
Bryan Tanner’s 4-1 win over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Aden Munz gave him third place at 113, with Cameron Newhook (195) pinning Cazenovia’s Patrick Livingston for third place and Jared Lawrence edging Zach Green (Phoenix) for third place at 220.
Zach Hill was fourth at 160, a finish that Ryan Rivenburgh matched at 285 pounds. Caspian Phillips was fifth at 145 and Cole Mullen fifth at 152 as Madyn LaFleur (99), Christian Mathews (120) and Gauge Parker (138) each were sixth.
Before all this, Marcellus and J-E faced each other last Tuesday night, the Mustangs claming 12 of the 15 bouts on the way to defeating the Eagles 64-12.
In consecutive bouts, Brown and Scherer got pins in the last seconds of the first period over, respectively, Rivenburgh and Lafleur.
Ciota, at 120, earned his pin over Mathews at the end of the second period, with Moses and Dan Okhman each getting second-period falls and Price pinning Phillips in 54 seconds.
In a tough 160-pound opener, the Mustangs’ Aiden Stasik edge Hill 4-3, with Santiarello earning a 14-4 win over Tanner and Weaver beating Cole Mullen 7-2. Grolling,. Hood and Gavin Ciota claimed forfeits.
J-E’s three wins included Newhook taking just 66 seconds to pin Paul Okham. Lawrence won a 5-4 decision over McKee as Nolan Jackson (126) won 10-6 over Adam Barbosa.
Marcellus, J-E and West Genesee would all be present for the pair of overall sectional tournament this Saturday at SRC Arena that determine berths in the Feb. 28-29 state meet in Albany.
