The Bishop Grimes boys soccer team, fresh off a big Sept. 28 win over Marcellus, did not have an immediate letdown in the two matches that followed.
During last Monday’s game against Faith Heritage, the Cobras earned a 3-0 shutout of the Saints.Up 1-0 at halftime, the Cobras pulled away late as Byam Mugushu found the net twice, with Deng Mawien earning the other goal.
Then Grimes outscored Tully 4-3 in Thursday’s rain, scoring all of its goals in the second half after trailing 1-0 at intermission. Mawien had a natural hat trick, earning three goals as Mugushu got the other goal, plus an assist.
Another big test loomed Saturday, Grimes against state Class C no. 11-ranked Bishop Ludden, whose coach, Oscar Vergara, was honored earlier in the week by the United Soccer Coaches group as a High School Coach of Significance.
Vergara was one of 41 high school coaches from across the United States to earn this honor, which recognizes coaches who, through character lessons, make an impact on and off the field.
What the accolades could not do was impact the game, though, as Grimes shut out Ludden 4-0, led by Mawien, who earned two of the Cobras’ goals. Mugushu also converted, as did Jack Gutchess, with Matt Tarby stopping all eight shots he faced.
Back on Monday night, Christian Brothers Academy earned one of its best wins of the season, facing the same Marcellus side that Grimes just beat and defeating the Mustangs 1-0.
Both teams would have all kinds of chances, but only the Brothers did so as Jack Harrigan, off a feed from Andrew Kohlbrenner, found the net. CBA’s defense was superb as Finn Wheeler finished the night with five saves.
A 5-1 win over Phoenix followed on Thursday, with Jack Harrigan getting two goals and one assist. Srvavan Kodaali had one goal and one assist as Dayton Sievers and Zach Witz also converted, with assists to Kohlbrenner, Josh Hulslander and Will Harrigan.
Manlius-Pebble Hill began its October slate by handling LaFayette 4-0 on Wednesday as Gopal Neopaney, Sam Hoke, Andrew Warren and Ayman El-Hindi each scored, assists going to Jack Hogan, Brendan O’Malley and Max Fung.
A 1-0 shutout of Blessed Virgin Mary followed on Friday during Homecoming weekend festivities, O’Malley’s first-half goal holding up as the Saints pressured plenty, but Ezra Hanlin stopped all 12 shots he faced.
This improved the Trojans’ record to 9-2 as it looked ahead to home games this week against Tully and Cato-Meridian.
