In the best local girls volleyball match last week, Marcellus battled with Solvay Thursday into a fifth sets before the Mustangs were able to subdue the Bearcats.
Solvay claimed the opener 25-16, then Marcellus dominated the second set 25-8. Another split followed, with the two sides exchanging 25-18 wins before a final set where the Bearcats hung close, but the Mustangs pulled it out 25-21.
Bronte Stahl finished with 10 kills, 11 assists and five digs to pace Marcellus. Elaine Grattan had eight kills and seven digs. Jenna Mattison had 12 assists, with Evelyn Webster getting 18 digs as Anna Fern gained six kills and three blocks.
Before this, the Mustangs rolled past Mexico 25-9, 25-13, 25-20 last Tuesday, with Stahl earning four aces, four kills and eight assists. Mattison also had four aces to go with 12 assists as Webster had 11 digs.
Solvay swept Phoenix 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 that same night, with Sophia Guadganolo getting 10 assists and seven aces. Emily Britton added four aces as Anastasia LaFlair got four kills and Jordan Bamba had eight digs.
Skaneateles continued its solid season in last Tuesday’s trip to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, where the Lakers tore past the Rebels 25-7, 25-11, 25-20.
Maeve Canty set the tone with six aces, earned nine kills and got two blocks and five digs, too. Lily Delasin had 13 assists as Grace Congel also got six aces, with Emma Keady earning five digs and Stella Zang earning three kills.
Moving to 12-1 on the season Thursday night, the Lakers hosted Jordan-Elbridge. After dropping the first set 25-16, the Eagles won the second set 25-21 before Skaneateles claimed the third set 25-14.
J-E was two points from forcing a final set before the Lakers won the fourth 26-24 to escape, having seen Maeve Canty gain 23 kills, six aces and 11 digs as Emma Miller finished with seven aces and nine digs.
Strong on defense, the Eagles got 18 digs from Elizabeth Bartoszewski and Ranait McGuire, with Ashlee Eaton getting 15 digs as Sarah Lane had 10 assists and Eaton produced four kills
Fresh off a Bronze division title at the Sept. 28 Baldwinsville Fall Swing Tournament, Westhill returned to the OHSL Liberty division and claimed a pair of matches in straight sets.
Of the two, the second was supposed to be a lot tougher, the Warriors challenged by 10-2 Homer last Thursday night, but the Warriors never let the Trojans get too close, prevailing in three sets 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
Sara Galante earned 16 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and two aces. Kate Heinrich added eight kills as Sarah Schwartz got 26 assists and three aces, while Gianna Militi, in addition to her 13 digs, earned five aces. Jaida Welch had seven digs and four aces.
Prior to that, Westhill swept past Oswego 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 last Monday as Schwartz earned 23 assists, while Militi had 14 digs and five aces. Galante got 10 kills, with Heinrich and Grace O’Connell earning four kills apiece.
Earlier in the week, J-E met Living Word Academy and it went to five sets. The Eagles were handled 25-15 and 25-12 in the first two sets,
but fought back to win the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16.
And J-E nearly completed the comeback before the Lions held them off 25-23 in the final set. Still, McGuire earned seven kills, with Lane getting 12 assists and Bartoszewski getting eight digs. Paige Lane served up six aces.
A day later, the Eagles fell in three sets to Cazenovia 25-11, 25-17, 25-22, with Bartoszewski earning 15 digs and Paige Lane eight digs as Eaton got four kills and five digs. Sarah Lane had five aces and five kills.
West Genesee got a 25-12, 25-20, 25-12 victory over Nottingham last Tuesday. Anna Snyder and Margaret Clancy both earned five aces, Clancy adding 12 assists and five digs. Julia Quirk had nine kills, while Isabella Allen gained seven kills and Mia Lamanna five kills.
Two nights later, WG was close in both of the first two sets against Cicero-North Syracuse, but still lost 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 to the Northstars.
Allen had eight kills, with Phoebe Anderson getting seven kills. Snyder produced 16 assists and eight digs, with Allen getting 11 digs and Megan Winn finishing with 10 digs.
Bishop Ludden got swept last Tuesday by LaFayette in three sets. Jasmine Cuffee earned 10 digs and Kate Ruddy added 10 assists as Megan Virkler got seven kills and Jayden Burney earned five kills.
But the Gaelic Knights turned around Thursday and earned a 26-24, 26-24, 25-21 win over Syracuse Academy of Science, claiming all of the tough points as Virkler got 11 kills and Burney added six kills. Ruddy earned 24 assists.
