In its only meet last week, the West Genesee girls swim team absorbed a 105-81 defeat to Liverpool, whose performance was more impressive given the Warriors’ circumstances this fall.
An extensive renovation project to Liverpool’s athletic complex has forced its indoor teams to have home contests elsewhere. For the girls swimmers, this means going nearly 20 miles north to Fulton Granby Elementary School.
The new facility did little to bother Liverpool on this night, as the Wildcats found out in a meet that was fairly close until the Warriors, down 65-61, claimed each of the last four races on the card.
Prior to that, the Wildcats had seen Allison Putnam and Hannah Murdock each win twice, Putnam going two minutes, 11.56 seconds in the 200 freestyle and also claiming the 500 freestyle in 5:53.15.
Murdock swept the sprints, holding off Liverpool’s Kaitlyn Thompson, 26.52 seconds to 27.09, in the 50 freestyle and also edging the Warriors’ Sophia Russo, 1:00.05 to 1:00.83, in the 100 freestyle.
In the lone relay that WG claimed, Murdock, paired with Anna Ivery, Taylor McFadden and Devon Burnside, took the 200 medley relay in 2:03.89. Burnside was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.38) and Maggie Smith was second in the200 individual medley in 2:34.50.
Skaneateles was at home last Friday night, facing Christian Brothers Academy. With its strong core of individual stars, the Brothers overcome a solid effort by the Lakers to prevail 102-82.
Lili Winkelman gave Skaneateles an individual title when she swam the 200 IM in 2:28.97, edging out teammate Grace King (2:29.37). Later, in the 200 freestyle relay, King, Amelia Musso, Caitlin Comer and Elizabeth Springer won in 1:49.59.
Other events were close, such as the diving competition, where Lexis Cottrill earned 198.45 points and Carlee Pitman got 194.40 points, just behind the 202.80 from CBA’s Sophia Menar.
Springer, in the 100 freestyle, went 58.65 seconds, with the Brothers’ Kaitlyn Bushnell prevailing in 57.99 seconds, while Lily Buchholz got a time of 1:04.32 in the 100 backstroke, making CBA’s Darien Tompkins prevail in 1:03.26.
Buchholz also was second in the 100 butterfly, with King runner-up in the 500 freestyle. Kayla Newman led CBA with strong times of 1:58.94 in the 200 freestyle and 5:10.85 in the 500 freestyle.
West Genesee is back home Thursday night to take on Baldwinsville as Skaneateles hosts Holland Patent and Lowville for a three-team meet on Friday.
