Just as it had done throughout September, the Marcellus girls tennis team relied on its consistency and depth to turn back challenges from OHSL Liberty division foes.
And that included the Mustangs’ neighbors as it faced Westhill last Wednesday afternoon and roared to a 7-0 victory over the Warriors.
Danielle Copp set the tone in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Katie Hagrman. Kathleen DeMarle nearly did the same beating Mikayla Carroll 6-0, 6-1, while Sophia Shaw got through a first-set tie-breaker to beat Sophie Langdon 7-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Casey Conklin and Maddie Vetsch had the closest of the four matches, working past Isabel Dickinson-Cominolli and Kaley Richmond 6-3, 6-4. West Genesee went head-to-head with Westhill on Sept. 13, and the Wildcats won 7-0 in single-set matches, including singles classics where Sophia Lowry edged Sophia Frost 11-10 and Angelina Allen beat Katie Hagrman by that same score.
Otherwise, WG controlled most of the contests, including a pair of shutouts by the doubles teams of Angelina Llanos-Katie Viau and Madelyn Chuff-Isabelle Wells. Alyssa Congel and Margaret Mello won 10-3 over Delaney Carroll and Hannah Johnston.
After that, Westhill lost, 7-0, to Christian Brothers Academy last Monday, with the closest match in doubles, where Sophie Langdon and Grace Lesselroth fell to Grace Catalano and Maddie Tallman 6-4, 6-3.
Then WG returned to SCAC Metro division action and beat Cicero-North Syracuse 6-1 last Tuesday, sweeping all four doubles matches, the closest when Wells and Olivia Grome went three sets to beat Sandy Lin and Lauren Misco 6-0, 6-7, 10-7. Allen lost in singles, but Viau rolled past Krista Feeney 6-1, 6-4 and Llanos had a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cambrie Hibbard.
A big Friday match pitted WG against Baldwinsville, but like their Sept. 3 encounter the Wildcats lost, 5-2, both points coming from straight-set doubles victories by Llanos-Viau and Chuff-Wells. Congel, Allen and Lowry all dropped their singles matches.
Skaneateles offered a stiff challenge to undefeated Christian Brothers Academy last Tuesday afternoon, but fell two sets shorts of upending the Brothers as the Lakers took a 5-2 defeat.
A singles point was earned by Lily Miller when she beat Ellie Mancini 6-2, 6-0. And in doubles, Ella Danforth and Emma Miller rallied for a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Grace Catalano and Grace DelPino.
With Kenna Ellis and Isabella Kroon falling in singles, the doubles matches proved pivotal. Quickly rebounding, Skaneateles shut out Mexico 7-0 on Thursday, but it wasn’t that easy. Kroon had to come from behind in singles to beat the Tigers’ Juliana Smith 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, with Meg Benedict and Olivia Walker having to do the same in doubles to get a 5-7, 6-2, 10-2 win over Amita Druce and Shelby Schumacher.
Jordan-Elbridge could not get a point from Chittenango in a 7-0 defeat last Tuesday, Anisa Bort in the closest of the seven matches for the Eagles as she lost, 7-5, 6-1, to the Bears’ Anna Rooney.
But the Eagles turned it around on Thursday, defeating Homer 4-3 as Bort got the only singles point J-E needed when she beat Marlena Kruman 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles, Delaney Dunham and Meghan Whalen won 6-4, 6-2 over Sienna Haskins and Allison Thompson. Lexi Delfavero an d Maddie Green won 6-1, 6-2 over Brynne Peck and Abby McLaughlin as Gabrielle Skotinski and Katelyn Precourt handled Charlote Wallis and Natalie Brown 6-0, 6-0.
