Still battling for its place at the top of the SCAC Metro division standings, the Cicero-North Syracuse Blue boys golf team got another opportunity to knock off first-place Fayetteville-Manlius last Friday afternoon at Lakeshore Country Club.
On its home course, the Northstars were up to the challenge with a nice scoring balance, and yet it wasn’t quite enough as the Hornets pulled out a 198-201 decision.
A day earlier, F-M had taken its first loss of the season 188-191 to Baldwinsville at Timber Banks, and at Lakeshore the match was just as close, including for individual honors.
C-NS Blue’s Brian Pellegrino posted a 39 for nine holes, which tied the Hornets’ Andrew Heyman and Mike Millimaci. D.J. Villnave and Jake Nardozza both shot 40, with Darin Townsend and Austin Alberici both posting 41.
What helped F-M maintain its slim lead was the fact that three golfers – Enzo Abruzzese, Adam Butch and Velton Perry – each shot their own rounds of 40.
Earlier in the week, C-NS Blue had beaten F-M’s White team 205-223. Nardozza led with a 39, while Villnave and Townsend both posted 41. Alberici and Pellegrino had matching totals of 43.
That same Monday, Liverpool had its own match against Baldwinsville, taking a 188-204 defeat to the Bees, but it rebounded on Wednesday afternoon to defeat C-NS’s Green team 195-212.
Liverpool would face F-M White on Friday afternoon at Woodcrest, and it proved a high-quality match, with the Warriors leaning on Spencer Baum and Dylan Husted to defeat that other group of Hornets 198-204.
Baum and Husted both shot one-under-par 35, with Connor Boland adding a 38 as they each topped the 39s from F-M White’s Anthony Ahn and Luke Weisiger. Then Dante Cassella shot a 42 and Caden Hacker added a 48 to help the Warriors hang on.
