Through the first half of its regular season, the West Genesee softball team maintained a .500 record, though the heart of its SCAC Metro division slate was still in front of them.
With a chance at a quality road win last Monday at Baldwinsville, the Wildcats were in great position, only to surrender it and fall 5-4 to the Bees.
A pair of second-inning runs had B’ville in front 2-0, but WG pitcher Kayla Hoovler settled down and blanked the Bees over the next three frames.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats notched a run in the fifth and seized a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Rachel Shackleton’s triple was the big blow as she got two RBIs, with Sophia VanHorn and Emma Garvey both doubling in runs.
Yet B’ville used a run in the sixth to cut WG’s lead to 4-3, and won it by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. Hoovler only allowed six hits, but walked seven. Emma Johnson hit a solo home run for the Bees.
It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to bounce back, hitting at will against Central Square a day later as it scored eight runs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie and tacked on eight more runs in the next two frames.
WG beat the Redhawks 17-7 as Abbey VanHorn set a career mark by earning six RBIs. Garvey scored four runs, with Jessica Simon and Mo Hoover each getting two RBIs. Shackleton, Arlea Vecchio, Sophia VanHorn and Maddy Tibbetts each had two hits and one RBI.
Westhill won a wild 19-14 decision over Homer last Monday. Even though it scored six times in the first inning, the Warriors needed 11 unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to break out of an 8-8 tie.
Janae Ricks hit a pair of home runs and scored four times. Jaida Welch got four RBIs, with Ricks, Vittoria Milti, Emma Shampine and Abigial Edgar each driving in three runs. Tatiana Wicker added two hits and two RBIs. Sarah Balduzzi scored three runs.
Jordan-Elbridge handled Mexico 14-1 last Tuesday, netting five runs in the first inning and scoring in every inning afterward.
The Eagles had 17 hits, 16 of them singles, with Megan Bard getting four RBIs and Ella Bard driving in three runs. Freshman pitcher Alexis Delfavero struck out 10 Tigers and only allowed four hits.
Potent as the Eagles were there, it went in the other direction on Thursday as Cazenovia shut them out 5-0, but on Saturday J-E again bounced back, defeating Union Springs 5-2.
Gabriella Bard and Ranait McGuire both doubled twice, with Bard getting a pair of RBIs. McGuire and Delfavero earned three hits apiece and Megan Bard added two hits.
Bishop Ludden, who was 1-4 going into last Monday’s game against Tully, made a late comeback in that game, the Gaelic Knights pulling out an 8-7 decision over the Black Knights.
Then Ludden was set to face state Class D no. 4-ranked Fabius-Pompey on Thursday, but that got postponed, as did many other local contests due to rains that fell the night before.
Off until Saturday, Ludden lost that day to Utica-Notre Dame 19-3. Kaitlyn Kibling had two hits and Ally Royal scored twice, but the Jugglers got 19 hits, four each by Kennedy McCoy, Jackie Roberts and Gabby Ellison as Roberts earned four RBIs.
Many of these teams had other games postponed by wet weather that lingered throughout last week and could affect this week’s games, too.
