As they do each spring, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team arrived on the court last week and immediately set out to establish its dominance over any of its challengers.
The Hornets rolled past Syracuse East 7-0 last Wednesday afternoon, with the singles trio of Riley Ma, Rohan Dhawan and David Fernando not dropping a game in any of their six sets of singles play.
Max Du and Andrew Shim did go longer in doubles, but beat Yasin Hassan and Salimo Musa 6-1, 2-6, 10-4. Fergus Brady and Anay Dalal got past Chris Edmunds and Curran Shannon 7-5, 6-3 as the teams of Jaden Duggal-Davin Woodridge and Ben Farber-McEntee-Andy Sun each won in two sets.
Manlius-Pebble Hill resumed action last Tuesday against Chittenango, with the Trojans needing to dominate singles play in order to earn a 3-2 victory over the Bears.
Dan Braverman got it going with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Nate Smith, with Charlie Mann handling David Seale 6-0, 6-1. And though it took a bit longer, Anthony Pitts worked past Evan Smith 6-1, 7-5, which made up for straight-set defeats by the doubles teams of J.J. Braverman-Harry Xu and Casey Beach-Alex Fung.
The exact same thing happened in Wednesday’s match with Skaneateles, all the points coming from singles for MPH as it worked past the Lakers 3-2.
Mann earned the crucial point, dominating the third set to work past Nate Fouts 7-5, 6-7, 6-0. Dan Braverman routed Andrew Neumann 6-1, 6-1 as Pitts got a 7-5, 6-4 win over Trevor Knupp.
Bishop Grimes lost, 3-2, to Phoenix last Tuesday. The Firebirds won three of the four contested matches, with Renny Breazeale claiming a singles default for the Cobras as Ryan Lange and Alex Olschewske beat Andrew Coleman and Jason Zhang 6-0, 6-1.
A day later, Grimes faced Cazenovia and was shut out, 5-0, by the Lakers, unable to win a set in any of the matches. Breazeale and Zed Weigand, playing doubles, had the closets match, a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to C.J. Monroe and Jake Wardel.
In Thursday’s 4-1 defeat to Chittenango, the lone Cobras point came when Weigand, in third singles, outlasted Evan Smith 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, but the Bears won every other match in straight sets as Hu and Jeff Wang took singles losses.
