It stayed dry long enough in the middle of the week for the Cazenovia and Chittenango boys tennis teams to each have matches against OHSL Liberty division foes.
The Lakers hosted Bishop Grimes last Wednesday afternoon, and did not come close to dropping a set in any of the matches as it routed the Cobras 5-0.
Aiden Kalteski got it going in first singles by working past Harry Hu 6-1, 6-0. It followed with Traian Cherciu defeating Jason Zhang 6-0, 6-1 and Liam Flannery handling Andrew Coleman 6-1, 6-0.
Though they had to work a bit longer in doubles, Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo beat Renny Breazeale and Zed Weigand 6-2, 6-1, while C.J. Monroe and Jake Wardel paired up to beat Sean Moran and Zach Schaubroeck 6-0, 6-2.
Just before that, Chittenango faced Manlius-Pebble Hill and was successful in doubles, yet could not grab a doubles point as the Bears fell 3-2 to the Trojans.
In first doubles, Chittenango’s team of Evan Edwards and Anthony Roberts worked past J.J. Braverman and Harry Xu 6-3, 6-4, with Devon Hardy and Brian Schermerhorn getting a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Casey Beach and Alex Fung.
Yet it was MPH claiming all three singles points, with Evan Smith doing the best among the Bears’ players in a 6-1, 7-5 defeat to Anthony Pitts as Nate Smith and David Seale got just one game between them in their defeats.
It wasn’t until Thursday that Chittenango was able to reach the win column, doing so by toppling the same Bishop Grimes team Cazenovia had beat a day earlier.
In this 4-1 decision, Edwards, in first singles, beat Hu 6-2, 6-2, with Roberts handling Jeff Wang 6-0, 6-2 to make up for a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 defeat Evan Smith took to Weigand.
But the Bears won both points in doubles, seeing Seale and Nate Smith prevail 6-0, 6-4 over Coleman and Renny Breazeale as Hardy and Schermerhorn got past Moran and Schaubroeck 6-1, 6-1.
