Armed with another strong top-to-bottom roster, the Christian Brothers Academy boys tennis team started its 2019 season last Monday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Bishop Grimes.
Dean Vlassis and Ben Vlassis both dominated in singles, with Dean topping Harry Hu 6-2, 6-0 and Ben getting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jeff Wang. In third singles, Shivam Nanavati handled Jason Zhang 6-0, 6-0.
It was a bit closer in doubles, where the Brothers’ duo of Max Lewis and Ayo Oguntola topped Renny Breazeale and Zed Weigand 6-3, 6-3, while Michael Hill and Matt Potenza beat Sean Moran and Zach Schaubroeck 6-4, 6-0.
From there, CBA went on to beat Chittenango by that same 5-0 margin on Wednesday afternoon. The Vlassis brothers and Nanavati all won in straight sets, while in doubles Lewis and Oguntola made a comeback to get a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over the Bears’ duo of David Seale and Nate Smith.
Manlius-Pebble Hill faced Westhill last Monday, earning strong finishes in singles, but unable to do more in a 3-2 defeat to the Warriors.
Dan Braverman worked past Mike Ferrara 7-6, 6-2, with Trojans teammate Anthony Pitts getting a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Dan Ferrara. And Charlie Mann won the first set from Tom Chaddock, only to take a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 defeat.
In doubles, J.J. Braverman and Harry Xu lost to Jackson Bradley and Ryan Rolince 6-1, 6-2, with Alex Fung and Matt Roberson falling to D.J. Caloia and Kyle Hagrman 6-2, 6-0.
But MPH did win on Wednesday, sweeping Phoenix 5-0. Braverman’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Evan Baldini foreshadowed more success as Mann beat Josh VanGorder 6-0, 6-1 and Pitts handled Jeff Cooper 6-1, 6-3.
The doubles matches were just the same, Braverman and Xu getting past Ryan Lange and Alex Olschewske 6-2, 6-1, while Fung and Roberson had a similar 6-1, 6-2 romp over Scott Barrington and Garrett Strang.
Back on April 2, Jamesville-DeWitt lost its opener 5-1 to Ithaca, losing both points in singles, but getting a point in doubles when Essex Glowaki and Dhruv Nanavati got past Dennis Kang and Quinn Tonole 6-3, 7-6.
J-D bounced back on Friday by winning a 4-0, rain-shortened match with Cortland. Peter Hatton, in singles, blanked Dan Ruggiero 6-0, 6-0, with Mark Bratslavsky working past Nick Djafari 7-6, 6-4.
Moving to doubles, Essex Glowaki and Drhuv Nanavati were successful in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grayson Jones and Trevor Jubran. Mike Bratslavsky and Aniket Maini paired up to beat Alex Musci and Henry Storch 6-1, 6-1.
