Before most of its other Onondaga High School League colleagues, the Cazenovia boys tennis team began its 2019 schedule, and did so with unqualified success.
The Lakers did not drop a single set in last Wednesday’s match against LaFayette, rolling to a 5-0 victory over the Lancers.
Mitch Romig and Aidan Kalteski both earned 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in singles, Romig defeating Griffin Garbut and Kalteski doing the same against Hunter Martorella as Traian Cherciu defeated Leanna Crouse 6-1, 6-1.
It was a bit closer in doubles for Liam Flannery and Dan Gavilondo, but the Cazenovia duo handled Kaleigh Danaher and Mason Shute 6-2, 6-3, just as Teddy Coughlin and Teddy Williams had a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Brandon Benjamin and Dante Friedman.
A day later, Chittenango had its season opener against Homer, the Bears unable to earn a set in any of the matches as it fell to the Trojans by that same 5-0 margin.
It was closer in doubles, where David Seale and Nate Smith nearly snared a set in a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Raymond Meng and Sean Powers, while Devon Hardy and Brian Schermerhorn were close, too, but lost to Tommy Britt and Ryan Cough 6-4, 6-4.
Up in singles, neither Evan Edwards nor Evan Smith were able to win a game in their matches against, respectively, Ben Herman and Adam Brown, while Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak topped Anthony Roberts 6-0, 6-1.
If the weather held, Cazenovia and Chittenango would face each other Monday, the Lakers also having matches against Skaneateles and Mexico later in the week as the Bears take on CBA and Westhill.
