Weather – first ice, then heavy snows – caused havoc with many schedules last week, including that of the Cazenovia girls basketball team, who had its game at New Hartford last Wednesday postponed until Feb. 2.
However, things cleared out in time for the Lakers to host Phoenix last Friday at Buckley Gym, and with a 41-24 victory over the Firebirds, Cazenovia improved to 4-4 on the season.
Trailing 11-8 after one period, the Lakers moved in front for good with stifling defense, holding Phoenix to just two points in the second quarter and not allowing much more in the second half, either, including just three points in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, Lindsey Lawson nearly matched the Firebirds all by herself, netting 19 points, with help from Carleigh Szalach, who had eight points, and Julia Bauder, who got seven points. Hannah Matteson added five points.
So began a stretch where the Lakers faced seven games in 14 days, this week traveling to Central Valley Academy and hosting Skaneateles before playing in the weekend’s Juggler Classic at Utica-Notre Dame.
At least Cazenovia played once last week – unlike Chittenango, who lost two games, one against CBA (now on Jan. 26) and another against Marcellus (now on Feb. 11) as the Bears were set to resume Tuesday at Westhill.
