Perhaps there was no better way for the Skaneateles girls swim team to wrap up its 2018 regular season than to take on its closest neighbors from Auburn.
They battled Tuesday night at the Community Center YMCA, where the Lakers were not quite able to keep up with the Maroons and took a 98-81 defeat.
Of all the races, Skaneateles won just three of them, including the 200-yard freestyle, where Lily Buchholz finished in two minutes, 11.35 seconds to hold off Auburn’s Sofia Granato (2:12.41) for the top spot.
Rory Comer was first in the 100 breaststroke, edging the Maroons’ Sydney Murinka, 1:15.05 to 1:15.36, while in the diving competition Carlee Pitman prevailed with 182.70 points.
In other races, Buchholz finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.91, while Elizabeth Springer was second in the 50 freestyle in 27.39 seconds.
Springer, Comer, Grace King and Alice Spaulding were second in the 200 medley relay in 2:04.28, while Buchholz, Springer, Rory Comer and Emily Comer swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.01 behind Auburn’s 1:48.13.
Auburn had a pair of swimmers claim two races apiece. Maura Moochler was first in the 100 freestyle (56.07 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:05.95), while Claire Alexander went 2:28.75 in the 200 individual medley and 1:03.09 to win the 100 butterfly.
Now Skaneateles can look ahead to the Section III Class C championships, which it hosts next Friday at 5 p.m. The state qualifier takes place for divers at West Genesee on Nov. 3 and the swimmers Nov. 4 at Nottingham.
