Even if the West Genesee girls swim team could not turn back Jamesville-DeWitt last Wednesday night in a 97-80 defeat, it still had plenty of pleasant moments to draw on.
First of all, it was Senior Night, a chance for the Wildcats to honor its most seasoned participants. Also, it got a chance to see one of those seniors, Maddie Zapisek, engage in two great duels with Red Rams star Amelia Hesler, and win them both.
It started in the 200-yard freestyle, which proved the quickest one-on-one race of the fall. In a time of 2:00.31, Zapisek held off Hesler, who had her own quickest time of the season in 2:01.95.
Later on, in the 100 butterfly, Zapisek finished in 1:04.76, less than half a second ahead of Hesler’s 1:05.22. Those were the only two events J-D didn’t claim during the points portion of the meet.
Haley Hagadorn, Maggie Smith, Miki Riley and Anna Ivery swam the 200 medley relay in 1:59.33, but J-D won in 1:58.48. Zapisek joined Ivery, Hannah Murdoch and Julianna Lisi to go 1:47.38 in the 200 freestyle relay, yet the Rams posted 1:46.09.
Smith was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.21 as Ivery got second place in the 50 freestyle in 26.74 seconds. Hagadorn posted 1:13.27 in the 100 breaststroke as Annie Marnell was second in diving with 160.10 points.
To pace J-D, Emma Galletta won twice on her own, taking the 50 freestyle in 26.40 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 57.50 seconds. The Wildcats compete again Wednesday night at Skaneateles before an Oct. 22 regular-season finale against Cicero-North Syracuse.
